Sports Opinion: The Great Cajun Evacuation

If you haven't already heard, there has been a mandatory evacuation order placed on Lafayette Parish for Saturday, Nov. 26. All residents are advised to go north, toward Monroe. Don't worry, we don't have another gigantic hurricane breathing down our necks. It's just the most important football game for the Ragin' Cajuns since the 1996 showdown with Texas A&M. Here's the scenario: The Cajuns visit the University of Louisiana at Monroe, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will have a great chance of being the Sun Belt Conference representative in the New Orleans Bowl. And in case you've been hiding in a hole, the New Orleans Bowl will be played in Cajun Field this year. A loss would give the Cajuns a 5-6 record - another year of "almost there." A win would give the Cajuns a 6-5 record - the first winning record since 1995. Forget the winning record; we haven't been to a bowl game since 1970. So, basically, this game is HUGE, not only for the program, but for this particular team. What this team has done for the second half of the season has been truly remarkable, and a conference championship and bowl appearance would cap it off in historic fashion. I was surprised by the student attendance, I didn't hear any talk of people not wanting to go to the game. I was very surprised to see that much at the game when I got there.

Well, when I was in college there wasn't much you could say to talk me out of taking a road trip!

Buffet in the tape deck and a few thirst quenchers were all we neeed to travel!

Well, I don't know.... Will there be some cold liquid refreshment waiting for me at the Z-mobile? Seriously, I do want to go. And I will if I can. My job often has weekend tasks. So ... if I don't have to be in St. Tammany or Washington Parishes (or Baton Rouge - ugh!), I just might hit the road to Monroe. I've never been to Monroe via southern LA, only from I-20. I'd probably shoot up I-55 to I-20 and then over to the west. ANYTHING to avoid driving thru BR! I'll let you know if I'm gonna be able to make the trip. Won't ya save me a seat at Malone if I do?
