UL Basketball Burnt ROUX: Marquie Cooke

Spoke with Marquie Cooke this morning at the scrimmage at Blackham, and it looks like he will be attending starting in the spring, and if all goes well, will be eligible for the fall. Did some research, and he signed at Virginia Tech out of high school as the top player in Virginia (#59 player in country). He left the team during the season for personal reasons. He transfered to Colorado State following a VT assistant coach, and was dismissed from the team (undisclosed reasons) prior to ever playing. It was also mentioned that there was a guard and center in this weekend as recruits who were not named.

This is the same kid??? When and How did this happen? Please give us more!

"Tech signed the highest-ranked, most decorated and honored recruit in its basketball history this past week when Nansemond River High School guard Marquie Cooke inked his letter of intent to play for new coach Seth Greenberg and the Hokies.

Cooke, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound point guard was ranked the nation's 24th-best high school player by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons. Before this week, guard Dell Curry, ranked 25th by Gibbons when he signed with the Hokies back in 1981, had been the top-rated recruit to come to Blacksburg.

Cooke was named first-team All-Group AAA in Virginia and was the Tidewater player of the year as a junior. He's led Nansemond River to a 47-6 record over the past two seasons.

For Greenberg - who's yet to coach a single game at Tech - his most significant early victory was signing Cooke.

"Marquie Cooke is the total package," Greenberg said. "He's everything we're looking for in a point guard. He's big, he's strong, he's tough, he's a winning player and he has tremendous leadership skills."

"One of the top recruits ever signed by Virginia Tech ... Top high school player in the state as a senior ... Strong, physical guard who could step into the starting line-up at the point as a freshman ... Excellent ball handler who makes other players better ... Tough, aggressive defensive player ... Proven scorer, both as a penetrator and a perimeter shooter ... Fits the Virginia Tech system very well ... A "complete package.""

High School: Three-year starter at Nansemond River High School in Suffolk, Va. ... First team AP All-State as a junior and senior ... Averaged 26.1 points, 9.6 assists and 6.3 rebounds per game as a senior ... Ranked #57 player in the country and #11 point guard by Rivals.com ... Ranked #41 by basketballphenoms.com and #47 by Rob Harrington in USA Today ... Played AAU ball for Boo Williams.

Personal: Marquie Lamar Cooke ... Born September 10, 1984, in Suffolk, Va. ... Son of Beulah Mason ... Has four younger siblings ... Plans to own his own business."

UL Basketball Re: Anyone know about this recruit?

Yep, same guy. I noticed him shooting the ball during timeouts in the scrimmage, and asking around, heard he was a highly recruited player from a year or two past who originally was with VT and CS. He was sitting in the stands at the end of the scrimmage, and while holding the scrimmage roster, I asked if he was going to be on the list for next year and he said yes. I introduced myself, and told him we were looking forward to him playing.

We do seem to have become transfer-U, but as long as the players take care of school requirements, I think Coach Lee will instill the discipline and work ethic to help them with personal goals.

I also spoke with Marque Cooke and he stated he was curently at Colorado St. and would start in January at UL. This guy is a point guard and can really handle the ball. I too saw a big man(hopefully HS) in on a visit.

Team looked good at times and at others lacked that ability to know where the other guy they were to pass to was.

Fun day at UL for many, my family included.

  6. UL Basketball ROUX: Ragin' Cajuns sign Marquie Player

The University of Louisiana men's basketball program notched its third signee of the NCAA's early-season signing period Monday, getting national letter of intent papers from former Virginia prep standout Marquie Cooke.

The 6-foot-3 Cooke played his freshman season at Virginia Tech before being dismissed from the Hokie program last April, and is currently enrolled at Colorado State but did not play in any games for the Rams. He will sit out a year as per NCAA regulations and be eligible at mid-term of the 2006-07 season.

The Ragin' Cajuns had previously inked two state high school products, 6-foot-6 Carencro wingman La'Ryan Gary and 6-foot-3 guard Damon Forest of Baton Rouge's Central High on Thursday.

When he signed with home-state Virginia Tech in November of 2003, Cooke was heralded as the highest-ranked, most decorated and honored recruit in the Hokies' basketball history.

Ragin' Cajun head coach Robert Lee apparently believes in that assessment.

"The first time he sets foot on the court, he'll be the best guard in the Sun Belt Conference," Lee said Monday. "He is a very, very talented player."

In his senior prep season at Nansemond River High in Suffolk, Va., Cooke was ranked as the nation's 24th-best high school player by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons. That's one notch higher than Gibbons ranked Dell Curry, Virginia Tech's previously-highest signee back in 1981.

He also was ranked 41st nationally by basketballphenoms.com, 47th by recruiting analyst Rob Harrington in USA Today and 57th overall and 11th among point guards by Rivals.com.

He transferred to Colorado State in August and at that time was expected to be a part of the CSU program. Rams head coach Dale Layer announced in an Aug. 23 news release that Cooke had been added to the CSU roster.

"He brings tremendous talent to the court and will fit into our system well," Layer said in that release. "He is equally effective scoring or distributing the ball, and will help our team to be successful."

But Cooke is not currently listed on the CSU roster. A spokesman in the athletic department said Monday that Cooke is no longer a part of the Ram program, but would not comment further.
So we've got a player who's been kicked off of two programs? Are we that desperate??

I guess if we forgive Southall a million times, we'll forgive anyone.

    Nice.

Anyway, I hope this cat is as good as Lee says he is, I hope he's worth it, and I hope Lee is as good a disciplinarian as everyone says he is.
