Thread: Prejean signs with Lady Cajuns

  1. UL Softball Prejean signs with Lady Cajuns

More than one girl in south Louisiana has felt a tie to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball program.

The Cajuns have been the model for success at the highest level of the college game for years, and young players have grown up wanting to emulate their skills.

But Teurlings Catholic's Monique Prejean has an even closer bond, one that will be solidified today when she signs a letter of intent with UL.

Prejean's older sister Lacy is an assistant coach with the Cajuns, and it's a natural fit to bring her talented younger sibling into the fold.

"I look forward to it," Monique Prejean said. "Lacy is a great coach, and I know she's going to push me to the next level. She knows my limits, what I can do.

"On the field, she's not my sister, she's a coach."

Lacy Prejean starred at Carencro High before helping Alabama to the Women's College World Series as a senior catcher in 2003, the same year UL last reached that stage.

Cajun co-head coaches Stefni and Michael Lotief aim to get the Cajuns back to Oklahoma City again this season, and that kind of focus is what the younger Prejean likes about it.

"It's an awesome program," Prejean said. "They practice to win a national championship. That's the goal. Every year UL is in the Top 25 or Top 10. I'd like to help them come together as a team to win a national championship."

When Prejean was a freshman, Teurlings carried an unbeaten record into the state championship game, only to suffer a 1-0 defeat.

"We were so close, it gives you a taste," Prejean said. "That was the highest I had ever gotten, and we weren't able to return there my sophomore and junior years.

"This past summer (coached by older sister Lacy) we finished fifth at nationals out of over 100 teams. We totally came together."

Like her older sister, Monique has held down the catcher position in summer league softball. At TCHS, she plays outfield.

"Over the years, I've been kind of a utility player," Prejean said. "It will probably be a wait-and-see situation at UL. Whatever the team needs, I'm going to do. Whether I'm on the field or a role player, trying to help out the other players, I'm ready to do.

"I just love it - the atmosphere, the competition, working hard and trying to get better as a team. You have friends, teammates and a bond that goes on forever."

The sisterly Prejean bond has been in place for years.

"I've definitely patterned myself after my sister," Prejean said. "She worked hard all her life, since she was 8. She was at the park every weekend, knew the game so well and understood the time she had to put in. I'd love to model her career."

Off the field, Prejean will major in nursing in keeping with other Cajuns in the program who tackle challenging fields.

"I knew I always wanted to go into a medical field," Prejean said, "and UL has an awesome nursing program.''

This is my hometown, and UL seems like the place to be."

Son will try out for Freshman football aslo. He is a tweener, 6'0" only 135#'s, but can fly, has good big hands. Has played some TE, DE, and LB. Basketball is his favorite, and will possibly try baseball and track as a Freshman and then choose a couple there after.

ps Look forward to see you and your crew around also!
