Fenroy Rushing: Will he make 1000 . . . YES

MONROE - They may be sharing the Sun Belt Conference title, but Tyrell Fenroy laid claim to the hardware here Saturday evening. "We're the Sun Belt champions," Fenroy said. "We're the best team in the conference." Fenroy also claimed something else during the University of Louisiana's runaway 54-21 win over UL Monroe, that being the title of all-time leader among Ragin' Cajun running backs. The freshman from LaPlace powered his way for 164 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries Saturday, giving him 1,053 yards in his first collegiate season. He became the first UL running back ever to eclipse the magic 1,000-yard mark. "The main thing was winning," said Fenroy, who turned in a school-record fourth straight 100-yard rushing game. "Once we got it pretty well in hand, getting 1,000 yards was on my mind." He didn't have to think long about it, going over that mark on a nifty 60-yard burst on the sixth offensive play of the second half. He easily surpassed UL's school mark of 979 season yards by a running back, that one set by Marcus Prier in 1995. Brian Mitchell is the only other Cajun to hit that mark, rushing for 1,311 yards as a senior in 1989. "We felt like he'd get his yards," said Cajun coach Rickey Bustle. "But he made some great runs. I got to talk to Tyrell & his Dad after the game. I don't know how he does it. He is not big and imposing at all. He and I are about the same size. He did let me give him a "chest bump"........like a rock.

Its the old saying

"Its not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog"

That statement explains the general attitude of alot of the players this year I think though.

LOUISIANA La. -- When he decided in February to sign Tyrell Fenroy to a scholarship, University of Louisiana at Lafayette football coach Rickey Bustle felt he was signing a unique running back. After just 11 games in a ULL uniform, Fenroy's performance has matched those expectations. Fenroy ran his way into the school's record books on Saturday after he gained 164 yards in ULL's season-ending 54-21 victory over the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Not only was the effort Fenroy's third straight game of gaining 100 or more yards, it gave him 1,053 for the season. Fenroy also scored three touchdowns as part of the Cajuns' rushing attack, ranked No. 7 nationally before the start of the game. It also put Fenroy into the school's record books, making him the first ULL running back to gain more than 1,000 yards in a single season since records were kept, beginning in the 1950s. Quarterback Brian Mitchell gained 1,311 in 1989, but the most yardage any Cajuns' running back gained before Fenroy was the 979 yards in 1995 from Marcus Prier. Fenroy put his achievement into perspective shortly before climbing aboard a team bus for home after Saturday's game. "I felt like I could get the thousand yards, because that was my goal at the start of the season," he said. "It's a very big thing for me, becoming the first running back (in UL) history to do that. "You have to remember that you need a good offensive line to do that," he said.
