My heart is bleeding for Penn State and for Joe Paterno. Why did he have to go?

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Graham B. Spanier, one of the longest-serving and highest-paid university presidents in the nation, who has helped raise the academic profile of Penn State during his tenure, stepped down Wednesday night in the wake of a sexual-abuse scandal involving a prominent former assistant football coach and the university's failure to act to halt further harm.

Spanier's departure came as the university's Board of Trustees also ended the 84-year-old Joe Paterno's career, denying him his wish to finish out the season, his 46th as the head football coach and his 62nd over all at the school.

Good, he needed to be fired in this exact manner. For all the great things that he has done, this will bring him down in flames. He deserves to be crucified in the media, he should not be shown any sympathy by the pundits. The act of doing nothing more than what he did is just as heinous as the crime itself.

You mean aside from the fact he aided in the facilitation of the rape of young boys?

I agree Cajun. Penn St Football deserves everything it is getting and more. All done in the dark comes to light. I pray for the victims of this horrible situation.

Why hasn't the old grad asst/current WR coach been fired. He had the same moral obligation that Paterno had. I agree w/ Paterno firing. But if Paterno is culpable for only telling his superiors and not the police, GA dis the same thing

Gather up the entire coaching staff in a room: "You're fired" and that's the end of it.

I am sure many people including myself would agree on this point. Penn St. as well as every other learning institution across this country is placed in high regard in our society for very good reason. These are institutions where our young people go to learn how to become leaders of people. For Penn St. or any other university to allow itself to become derilict in its moral responsibility to the powerless & allow a totally deveiant sexual preditor to set up a playground of sexual abuse perpetrated on the weakest among us without any fear of repercussion is beyond belief.

Joe Paterno has been one of the most famous & revered Americans in the history of this whole nation. It was incumbent upon him to fulfill his moral responsibility as a leader in this country & role model to young men both within the Penn St. program & without to step up & make certain that his friend whom he had helped bring to this institution was vetted. Vetted to be sure that if he was in any way this type of evildoer, that he be removed from the university, & be given up to the proper authorities & given mental treatment in order to overcome his deep seated problems. Anyone who could possibly see this issue in any other way, needs to have their moral & spiritual compass checked & repaired, because the basis of their whole thought process & perception of reality is in dire need of being reprioritized. I won't argue this as a typical ranter. I will simply state it for the record as a father & citizen of a country that was founded on the basic fundamental of decent Christian & Godly principles of protecting the very weakest among us. This is what separates us from all lower forms of life & lays forth the foundation that we were definitely created in the image & likeness of God & simply did not evolve by accident.

What would you say the over/under is for Joe Pa's health? I give him six months.
