The Ragin’ Cajuns football team scored two touchdowns in the final 3:08 of Saturday’s home finale to cap off an undefeated season at Cajun Field with a 36-35 victory over in-state rival ULM.
The comeback came on the heels of the Warhawks intercepting a Chris Masson pass which led to a Jyruss Edwards touchdown run that gave the visitors a 35-24 lead with 3:08 remaining.
A personal foul penalty on the ensuing kickoff placed the Cajuns (8-2, 6-1 Sun Belt) in ILM territory. Blaine Gautier, who was shaken up on the previous drive and replaced by Masson, re-entered and directed a six-play, 48 yard drive capped off by a 16-yard touchdown pass to Darryl Surgent at 2:05 that cut the deficit to 35-30.
Brett Baer’s onside kick bounced over the Warhawks kickoff return unit and was recovered by Ladarius Green at the La.-Monroe 39-yard line.
Gautier completed passes of 12 yards to Robert Walker and 24 yards to Javone Lawson to move within three yards of the endzone. On the next play, Alonzo Harris crossed the goal line with the go-ahead tally that put the Cajuns in front 36-35.
The Warhawks (2-7, 1-4 Sun Belt) reached Cajuns territory in search of an improbable comeback of their own. The visitors ran out of time, though, when a Kolton Browning pass to Brent Leonard was caught in-bounds and the next snap didn’t come until three seconds remained which resulted in Browning leaving the pocket and being forced out-of-bounds to end the game.
Prior to the string of 12 unanswered points to rally for victory, the Cajuns were shutout in the previous 27 minutes of the second half with four drives ending in a punt and another on Masson’s interception.
Louisiana finished a perfect 5-0 at Cajun Field in 2011, marking the first undefeated season at Cajun Field since 1987 (5-0) and only the fourth ever since the facility opened in 1971.
Gautier finished 30-of-47 passing for 355 yards and four scores. Green set the Cajun Field record for most receptions by a Cajuns player hauling in 13 receptions for a season-and career-high 136 yards.
Gautier threw for 300-plus yards for the third time this season and recorded his second game with four TD passes (10/15 vs. North Texas).
The crowd of 28,176 left the Cajuns with an average attendance of 29,171 in five games at Cajun Field in 2011, setting a single-season record. The previous record was 25,224 in 1977.
The Warhawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 11:34 mark in the first quarter on a 62 yard touchdown run by Browning.
Later in the first quarter, Edwards capped an eight play, 60-yard drive with a four-yard TD run to extend the La.-Monroe advantage to 14-0.
The Cajuns pulled within seven points at the 11:47 mark in the second quarter on a 22-yard touchdown strike from Gautier to Green.
Javone Lawson posted his sixth touchdown of the season with 7:38 left in the first half after hauling in a 17-yard pass from Gautier in the corner of the endzone to even the contest at 14-all.
Green gave Louisiana its first lead of the game at the 5:23 mark in the second quarter after making an exceptional 43-yard TD catch to put the Cajuns up 21-14. On the play, Green picked up his 21st career touchdown reception which moved him into second place in school history for career touchdowns
With three seconds left in the first half, kicker Brett Baer added to the UL advantage posting a 41 yard field goal to give the Cajuns a 10-point edge. The field goal was the fifth of the year for Baer from 40-plus yards.
In the second half, the Warhawks cut the UL lead to 24-21 after Edwards posted his second touchdown of the game on a five-yard run. La.-Monroe regained the lead on a 12-yard touchdown reception by Edwards from Browning to make the score 28-24 Warhawks with 14:53 left in the game.
