LOUISIANA La. - The University of Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team will host its annual Hibernia Bank Classic Friday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 30 at Cajun Courts. Some of Friday’s draws will be held at Red Lerille’s Health Club in Lafayette.

“We have some good teams participating in this tournament and there will definitely be some tough competition,” said Head Coach Justin McGrath.

In addition to host Louisiana-Lafayette, this event will feature 10 teams, including Alcorn State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Lamar, LSU, Mississippi State, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss. and Texas-Arlington. LSU and Mississippi State finished last season ranked 10th and 23rd respectively, by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The tournament will include 48 players in singles competition, 32 in flight A and 16 in flight B. In doubles action, there will be 12 teams in flight A and eight teams in flight B.

Flight A singles will begin Friday, at 8:30 a.m., with flight B singles immediately following at 10 a.m. Flight A and flight B doubles will commence Friday, at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, flight A and B singles semifinals will begin at 10:30 a.m. Doubles semifinals for flights A and B will begin Saturday, at 3 p.m. The championship round for singles play will start Sunday, at 10 a.m., with doubles championship action immediately following at 12 p.m.

We’re definitely going out with the mindset that we can be successful this weekend,” added McGrath. “The field is solid, but I am confident that we can compete at a high level.”

For UL, four players will compete in flight A singles. Senior Robin Ley will start the Cajuns off at 8:30 a.m., followed by Shaun Ellison, Amanjot Singh and Dusan Tabak.

The lone Cajuns player in flight B singles, freshman Matthieu Truong, will play Friday, at 10 a.m.

In flight A doubles, Dusan Tabak and Shaun Ellison will play Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Robin Ley and Amanjot Singh.

This is the men’s third tournament of the fall season. In their last appearance at the Arlington Futures, Singh led the way by winning five rounds and advancing to round 16 of the main draw.

“We’re going to play with lots of pride out there and this annual tournament is always a big event for us,” McGrath added.

It is going to be a good looking year for the Cajuns tennis team. The men return 2 ranked players in Singh and Tabak as well as last years #4 and #5 players in Ley and Ellison. We have added a top notch French player as a youngster in Matthieu Truong. I have not heard about a player that was very consistant for us at the #6 spot in Abaker, but I am hoping that he is back as well. He had a winning record at the #6 position all year and if you can pull off those bottom spots on a regular basis it is huge.

The only player we lost from last year was our #1 player in Evenghi Cordenueau. Althought that is going to be a huge loss, the improvment of Singh and Tabak at the top of the lineup should be enough to cover that loss. Our top 4 performers from last season should be as strong or stronger than any one in the Belt and we should be again nationally ranked this upcoming season.

Injuries are always tough in tennis, since you usually only carry a handfull of backup players, but I am looking forward to what could be another unbelievable season of Cajun Netter tennis.

Also, the women's team has steadily improved and should make some noise in the belt this year.
