LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 7 on the possible closure of the Lafayette mail processing and distribution center.
The Advocate reports the U.S. Postal Service is considering closing mail processing facilities in Lafayette and New Orleans, consolidating operations in Baton Rouge as part of a national cost-cutting effort to offset declining revenues.
Postal Service spokesman McKinney Boyd the closure would save about $7.3 million a year.
The Lafayette City-Parish Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a resolution in support of keeping the Moss Street facility open.
The Postal Service is considering the closure of about 252 processing centers nationwide.
Louisiana has four regional mail processing and distribution centers, in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans and Shreveport.
A decision on the Lafayette facility is expected by March.
