LOUISIANA La. - Head coach Rickey Bustle said that changes would be made this week on the defensive half of the University of Louisiana's football team.
But there's only so much that can be done, especially when the defensive line resembles remnants from a MASH unit.
"We've had some guys that have had a rough go of it with injuries," said junior defensive tackle Marshall Delesdernier. "We just need to get a cohesive unit on the field."
That front wall had 335-pound nose tackle Mike Moore on the field for only four plays last Thursday with a bad ankle, leaving perhaps the biggest hole in what became a 39-36 loss to Arkansas State. Junior tackle Travis Ferguson was only available for 15 plays with a similar ankle injury.
The 1-5 Cajuns were also without defensive backs Michael Adams and Jarrett Jones with knee problems, but the up-front losses were felt more acutely when the Indians rushed for 264 yards.
"We need to tackle better," said defensive coordinator Brent Pry. "We had 20 missed tackles against Arkansas State. We only had six two weeks ago against Central Florida and we did well the next week against Florida Atlantic for about three quarters."
