The 2005 Cingular Wireless Cajun Cup will have a new look this year. The annual 10K road race that has raised thousands of dollars for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun track and field program will have a new course that will shift the focus to downtown Lafayette. "The change will make the course faster," said Todd Delahoussaye of the Cajun Road Runners Club, which has long been a major factor in the Cup. "There are more straightaways and fewer turns, and most runners like that." The Nov. 12 race will start and finish in downtown, while in previous years the staging area and finish line were both at UL's Cajun Field. Now the route will take runners down Johnston Street, to College Road, and to Congress Street for a return downtown. This year, there will be a Friday night pasta dinner at Parc San Souci from 6-7 p.m. for race participants sponsored by Johnny Carino's, in addition to Downtown Alive activities that evening. On the day of the race, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns host Florida International at 4 p.m. in the football home finale at Cajun Field. There will also be an Art Walk in downtown on Saturday night. "We're trying to make it a big event," Donna Delahoussaye said. "With Downtown Alive, the football game and the Art Walk, there will be a lot going on. The race drew between 700-800 fans last fall, when it was held earlier in the autumn to accommodate the Cajuns' football schedule and tailgating activities. Now, with the new race route, there won't be that kind of conflict.

The Cajun Cup has been billed as the Cajun Running Festival in the past, and its popularity has grown because of the atmosphere surrounding the event.

Now, with running communities' schedules disrupted in New Orleans and Baton Rouge by damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Cup could attract displaced participants.

"We're hoping we'll have a migration of runners from New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Todd Delahoussaye said.

"I'm excited about the changes that have been made," said Timmy Lemaire, UL's distance coach and a frequent marathoner. "We're very appreciative to the Cajun Road Runners Club and everyone connected with the Cajun Cup, because this is our major fund-raiser every year."

I'd like to encourage everyone to come out to the Cajun Cup 10K race Saturday morning. This event is the main fundraiser for our UL Track and Field team. The race has taken on a new look this year by beginning and ending in downtown Lafayette. The normal spread of food and drinks will be available post-race(that's why I'll be there). This will provide an excellent opportunity for you diehard tailgaters to start your day with a little exercise and a cold one. The long sleeved T-shirts are a treat, too. Registration is available Saturday morning until 7:45AM at Parc Sans Souci in downtown Lafayette. Everyone please come out and join me in popping a top about 9AM.

A cool, crisp fall morning was the perfect setting Saturday for the annual Cajun Cup 10K Race and one-mile fun run. Race director Lance Veazey said this year was the first time the race was held in downtown Lafayette but he hopes to continue holding the event downtown in the future. "We really wanted to try to get local businesses involved, so we're trying to keep it here," Veazey said. Veazey said about 800 people participated in the 10K Race and about 150 to 200 people were a part of the one-mile fun run. "We had a lot of kids do the one-mile run, so it's good to see people out here with their families having fun," he said. Tricia Chaisson has participated in the Cajun Cup since 1991, and this year brought her 16-month-old daughter, Kailee, along for the race. Although she's too little to run just yet, Chaisson said she pushed Kailee in her stroller as she made her way through the 10,000-meter course. "She loved it," Chaisson said. "She really had a lot of fun." Paul Guilbeau took part in his fourth Cajun Cup on Saturday, and said he enjoys getting a different view of the scenery. "I think it's so beautiful to be running down the streets you usually drive on," Guilbeau said. "It lets you look at things differently."
