Thread: If you won the lottery...

  1. #1

Default If you won the lottery...

Here's the scenario. You bought a powerball ticket yesterday because the jackpot was 250 million dollars. After taxes you have about 125 million dollars in your pocket to spend as you wish.

The question is, how much of that money would you donate to UL athletics?

Also, would you choose to give it all to Football, or basketball, etc. Would you want it to go towards rennovations? Etc, etc.

If you do win, the wise thing would be to take annual payments. If you take the lump sum, you would probably only get about half of the actual payout. Then take out taxes and you would only get 1/4 of the $290 million (I think that's what it is). Either way, if I did happen to win, I'd donate some to UL athletics, but I'd have to take care of myself first.

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . . Re: If you won the lottery...

Since I know I could live off of 100 million for about 8 lifetimes, I would donate about 25 million of it to UL.

If I won $125 million after taxes, assuming they pay that out over about 40 years, that makes about $3.5 million per year...the initial payment would go to taking care of myself and the rest of my immediate family, and I'd give each of my younger cousins a college fund (with the condition that they either a) at least consider UL and b) don't go to school with our neighbors to the east unless that's the only place their career path is offered). Any extra would be put in savings to compound interest. The 2nd year's payments would pay off whatever is left over on the building debt at St. Theresa in Abbeville, and I'd spend a little on myself. Half the remaining balance would be donated to UL, the other half saved. By the end of the 5th year of payments, it would be my hope to have donated in the neighborhood of $5 million to UL Athletics with the understanding behind it (and to continue it) that an official Athletic Foundation would be started so that we wouldn't be handcuffed by the state's budgeting.

Wow, never knew I had any idea what I'd do with that kind of money until I started typing. Fun. I need to get on winning that money ASAP.

I would first use the money to find a new president for the University.

I would then donate $1,000,000.00 to each major sport. Men's basketball, baseball, football; Women's softball, basketball.

However, I would set it up as a trust so that the money would last as long as necessary.

I have often thought about this scenario. Would be great if it happened to myself or any other UL alum who would donate to the program. Here's to wishing.

You'd be better off taking the lump sum and investing it, etc. You are not including any opportunity costs in your annual payments scenario.

I would buy a college or two with 10-15M, then start my own CAF and spend the cheese on a case by case basis for athletics.

1 million and track how it was used. At 5% that would increase the budget by a whopping $50,000. That would solve the office supply shortage for the sid and that's about all. If someone would donate 25 million that would provide an increase of 1.25 million per year at 5% interest. Not exactly raising our budget to bcs standards. I think this illustrates the difficulty that the university has with increasing the athletic budget. If football game and every men's basket ball game sold out (5 games at 35000 @ $20 per ticket, 12 games at 10000 @ $20 per ticket for 5.9 million) our budget would still be less than the d-1 average. We have to stop thinking that 1 million dollars is a lot of money. 1 million dollars is a pittance in today's college athletics. It will take many millions to get UL on a level playing field with just the bigger budgets in the Sunbelt, the Mac etc.

1st - Lay 20M or so on Ray's desk and get his resignation letter or NO $$$
2nd - Endow all athletic scholarships with the money, whatever the costs
3rd - Get my money and my arse on that AD search committee
4th - Get my money and my arse on that Pres. search committee
4th - Get an AD with vision, aggressiveness, and a PLAN and get the hell out of
    the way
