Twice in the last month, Kris Cox' putter let him down in the final round and kept him from winning a Nationwide Tour event. On Sunday, Cox didn't have to worry much about the flat-stick. The magic was coming from his pitching wedge.
Staring bogey in the face with a one-shot lead over three players, Cox holed a chip-shot at the 18th green, winning the Nationwide Tour Permian Basin Charity Golf Classic at an 18-under par 270. Cox also chipped in for birdie on hole No. 17, regaining the lead after a 3-putt bogey on the previous hole.
Two holed chips in two holes to win a tournament. Sounds like a story made for TV.
"I guess when it's your time, it's your time," a clearly stunned Cox said after walking off the 18th hole. "The last hole sets up tough for me. ... I was just trying like crazy to get the ball up-and-down. I hit (the chip) too hard, but I had some spin on it and it was going to be about 10 feet from the hole.
"It hit the pin and went in. Literally, I was in shock."
