JONESBORO, Ark. - Eric Neihouse's 35-yard field goal as time expired tore the heart out of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns here Thursday night as the Arkansas State Indians claimed a 39-36 shootout victory in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference game for both teams.
The Cajuns had just marched 80 yards in 18 plays to forge a 36-36 tie with 52 seconds remaining, scoring on a 3-yard lunge by Josh Harrison, and had hoped to force overtime at Indian Stadium.
But Kevin Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the ASU 39-yard line, a Shermar Bracey draw play reached the UL 48 and Nick Noce's 30-yard run put the ball on the Cajun 18 to set up the game-winner.
That capped a 25-7 fourth quarter scoring advantage for ASU, which trailed 29-14 after three quarters of play.
Louisiana dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in Sun Belt play, while the Indians improved to 3-3 and 2-1.
"I told the team that I understand their frustration," coach Rickey Bustle said. "But we worked all week and we came here and tried to win the game.
"We self-destructed a little bit in the fourth quarter. We had a late-hit penalty after stopping them on a fourth down, got beat deep on one pass and didn't cover a kickoff, and still we were there with the game coming down to a field goal at the end.
"We worked to win all week. Somehow we've got to be able to stop people."
One week after folding at home against lowly Florida Atlantic, the Cajuns took the fight to the Indians and finished with 457 yards rushing and 554 yards overall. They converted a staggering 14-of-19 third-down attempts and controlled the ball for 35:44 behind the leadership of freshman quarterback Michael Desormeaux.
