That was a very good and factual article. Talk of going to a "bigger" bowl is just silly. I think we owe it to the New Orleans Bowl to go there and represent our conference with pride AND totally demolish the attendance record. Remember, the New Orleans Bowl being created is what got our conference into bowl games.
On another note; I was looking for the thread listing UL's attendance figures for both Cajun Field records and Sun Belt records. Would that poster please update that info; I know we now have a new top record for the Sun Belt, but I know FAU opened their new stadium and had a good sized crowd. Thanks.
I agree.
Why would any Cajun fan even want to go to any other Bowl, unless it is a BCS Bowl? The ultimate payout for the University will be based on actual tickets sold by the University. New Orleans is a great town for a Bowl game and party. I don't think 25,000 Cajun fans could or would purchase airline and game tickets to some "Bigger" Bowl game in some far away place. Thus, UL would probably loose money and fans could not participate in as large a number. The New Orleans Bowl is the perfect Bowl game for the Cajuns and Cajun fans!
I totally agree! Why is there even any discussion about "other options"? It's absurd to talk about any "Bigger" or "Better" bowl game at this point. The N.O. Bowl would be the best thing to happen for this program without question. The only thing remotely better would be a BCS bowl, which we have zero shot at right now. Maybe if we get a few bowl appearances and wins under our belt and build a stronger reputation, THEN let's talk! Right now - let's go bowling in New Orleans!!! Let's work on finishing out the season in style and packing the Superdome!
No other bowl holds as many "prestige builder" cards as does the New Orleans Bowl.

I have continued to poke around looking for info concerning bowl payouts etc. Some interesting info.
In 2010 the average per team cost for a non-BC bowl was around 1,060,000. That is per the NCAA.
The payouts can be extremely misleading. A couple of years back one of the bowls tried to reduce the participating schools exposure by not requiring as many tickets to be sold. However the payout would be "reduced" under the million dollar mark. The conferences objected since it would lose prestige due to the lower payout. In reality the difference was something like this. The bowl offered a million dollar payout by giving the team 20,000 tickets at 50 bucks each or we can give you 10,000 tickets at 50 bucks each and your "payout" is half a million.
The New Orleans Bowl actually seems to be one of the better deals. If they do what they did a few years back the SBC will buy a group of tickets. They will then turn those over to the SBC rep at no charge to cover the band, dance team, and travel party. The ticket allocation isn't bad either. Bottom line is that the conference should be able to walk away with a little pocket change.
A note about those other bowls. Almost all of the bowls have conference tie-ins and when those slots can't be filled they open up possiblities for other conferences with eligible teams. The catch is those other conferences don't have contracts with the bowl. So if you have a bowl who was going to take the Big 12 8th place team and they aren't eligible but the SBC does have one eligible the bowl does not and probably will not offer the same payout. That 1.5 mil that looks so good but probably isn't anyway is going to be a lot less for an SBC team.
So yes the New Orleans Bowl is a great bowl for us on every account. If we end up anywhere else other than New Orleans I think it will be a dissappointment.
I think if we can get to NO for the bowl, that would be fantastic. Remember the fans for the Tulane games!! This could really be fun. Not only for Acadiana but our fans and their families and friends in NO. Plus, there are a number of folks who'll go because it's an LA team. Lowest costs to send team; lowest cost for fans. Love it. Besides, maybe we could have one of those pre game/post game parties like we used to for the Tulane games. In NO we called it the post game win or lose party. They were a ball.
The games I went to during the late 80's against Tulane were some of my fondest memories from my time at UL. I am stoked about the possibility of going to the NO Bowl.
New Orleans has first selection this year and they don't have to release a team for any game except a BCS game.
Most "better paying" bowls don't pay as well as New Orleans if you look at the fine print. There are no bowls with a smaller ticket purchase requirement and they don't extort a "marketing fee" from the participants like many bowls do.
Remember when people were stunned that the MWC gave up the big Liberty Bowl payout for the smaller Las Vegas payout? What most people didn't understand was the Liberty charged a large marketing fee to promote the MWC and had a huge ticket purchase agreement. MWC netted more money by going to a bowl with a smaller payout.
There is one other fact that can be missed by some of our fans. The New Orleans Bowl "payoff" is much more than just the money they pay us. The "payoff" for a more or less local NO Bowl will be recruiting more local fans, more New Orleans area recruits and potential recruits getting to attend the game, selling season tickets, and Cajun stuff.
NO Bowl is a super deal if we can get it.
