LOUISIANA La. -- Jerry Babb has enjoyed the offensive weapons at his disposal during his last two years. Now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette quarterback has more of them.
Babb hopes to feature ULL's offense again when the Cajuns host Central Florida at 7 p.m. today. Both teams are 1-2.
While Babb currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in total offense, he's not ULL's only offensive threat:
Freshman Tyrell Fenroy, who averages 7.1 yards per carry and has 221 yards, has helped give the Cajuns a strong ground game.
Wide receiver Derrick Smith, a freshman from Florida, leads ULL with 16 receptions for 195 yards, while senior Bill Sampy has nine for 135.
Receiver Corey Fredrick, from Smith's hometown of Fort Lauderdale, has caught nine for 196, while Kevin Robbins, a sophomore, has five catches for 75 yards.
Babb has also done his part, throwing for 559 yards and rushing for 115 more in three games.
"We're spreading it out and that means we're getting the defenses out the box more," Babb said. "The offensive line has been coming through with their blocking and now we're showing the defenses a running game."
Fenroy, a 190-pounder from LaPlace's St. Charles Catholic, has an explosive running style.
"He's a freshman, but he has great vision and he gets his shoulders down to the pads level and falls forward when he runs," he said. "Tyrell also has that ability to make the first tackler miss, because he also has some speed."
After his first 31 carries, Fenroy has yet to be tackled for a loss and has averaged 73.7 yards per game.
Learning the moves of ULL's new receivers has taken time during the first three games, but Babb said there's enough talent to offset that.
