UL Football some of my thoughts on the UCF game

I was checkin out the game notes or whatever they call that stuff you can get from ragincajuns.com. I got a couple comments to make:

We virtually equal them on passing offense rank (UL - 205.3 yds/gm - 75th in the nation, UCF - 242 yds/gm - 46th in the nation), so I think we can cancel each other out in this category.

We are way more dominant in the rushing offense rank (UL - 192 yds/gm - 27th in nation, UCF - 68 yds/gm - 111th in the nation). After seeing what our rushers can do when we open up holes for them, and after seein this stat, I think we got 'em beat here for sure.

We also rank ahead of them in total offense (397.3 yds/gm - 48th----them, 310 yds/gm - 9th) and scoring offense.

Although we rank behind them in rush defense, we rank AHEAD of them in pass defense. recall from my stats above that they are meager in rushing yards per game, so our relative lack of rush defense (which won't matter if we shore up our Defense) won't matter as much. On top of that, their strength is their passing game, and our pass defense ranks way ahead of theirs, so this is lookin good to me.

Basically what I'm sayin here, is that, if we don't give them the W by turning over the ball, I think this game is very winnable. What do you think?

    God Bless.

Good analysis. I think you are absolutely correct.

I also think that we can beat just about anybody, IF WE DON'T TURN THE BALL OVER. However, we haven't proven over the last 3 years that we can hold on to the ball. It may be a case of everybody thinking too much about holding on to the ball. You know the old saying about the guy on the bike and there is only one tree in his path within miles, "I'm not going to hit the tree, I'm not going to hit the tree, I'm not going to hit the CRASH!!!!!!!!. ~~~~, I hit the tree."

In any event, this case is the litmus test for the rest of the year. Not because UCF is that great, but because it is our first test after the colapse at Eastern Michigan. If we don't win this game, I don't think we are going to be turning the perverbial corner anytime soon.

    GEAUX CAJUNS!!!!!

"We're not going to lose to UCF, We're not going to lose to UCF, We're not going to lose to UCF!"

This is what worries me, too.

Quit posting your sucky stats vs your sucky competition! The only reason you're ranked that high in certain categories is because you haven't really played anybody except for Texas. Get over it! Most of those stats are gonna be meaningless come saturday. Look at who we've played. South Carolina, a SEC team that came very close to beating Georgia. USF, a team that just spanked Louisville when they were #9 in the country. Marshall, a team that was one stupid play call away from beating Kansas State, an always tough Big 12 team. Now to who you've played. Texas, a team worthy of all it's praise. Eastern Michigan, oh my gosh! I don't care if they did beat us in 2003. That was under Kruczek and the 1st game that Steven Moffet started. As a true freshman. We also had a few starters get suspended around that time. A lot of things have changed since then. Northwestern State, a D-1AA team. Are they even ranked in D-1AA? So please quit comparing our stats. We've obviously played tougher competition. With Texas being the exception. False hope from meaningless stats.

I believe you're ignoring the fact that we played Kansas St. pretty tough last year. It was 30-20 late in the game before KSt. won 40-20. Not bad in my book. And all this "We beat A, and A almost beat B, so we could have almost beaten B"? Doesn't work like that! If you want to look at it that way, last year we "almost" beat Troy and Troy "almost" beat LSU, so we "almost" were contenders for a BCS bowl game. I mean, come on!

So, what you're saying is that you are going to make fun of us for losing to a team that you lost to a couple of years ago? Good thinking! You're forgetting that EMU "almost" beat Cincinnati in the first game of the season, so you know where that can take us!

Wow, somebody didn't even take a second to look do some research. NWST is a very very good I-AA team. Heck, they beat UL-Monroe in the first game of the season. If they played in the Sun Belt, they might finish right about in the middle.

I don't know about you, but I would rather have false hope from meaningless stats than false hope from ONE WIN IN THE PAST 18 GAMES!

    But thanks for trying.

I can see you posted at 5 am, which clearly means you need to get a life. But you are right, you team is an excellent one with the resume to prove it, just ask your coach. Ooooppss!

It was probably 6AM - which isn't too far fetched if you work a day job. Or get up early to run/work out before work. I'm not sure if you're implying that sleeping in is "having a life."

But anyway - Knightrider - I'd just let this go. These guys take pride in comparing themselves to Louisana Monroe or only losing by 20 to Kansas State.

They simply don't comprehend that a 1-17 team could have aspirations to be more than that. To compete with teams at any level and not settle for only losing by 3 touchdowns.

If only their team followed that mentality

On the contrary, I think we know exactly how you feel. Our program has been on the downside for over a decade now and the administration has seemed to care little about athletics for quite some time. I'm sure there are plenty of folks on this site that could tell you how many winning years, etc, we've had; but that doesn't mean squat. While you guys were going 1-17, we weren't much better; but this program IS on the rise and will get back to respectability very soon. Is this the year? Heck, I don't know; but the fans are getting restless, and I take that to mean that 3, 4 and 5 win seasons are not good enough. Perhaps they are at UCF. And I don't care what conference you compete in, the goal is to win THAT conference. We have yet to do that; so first things first. 20-pt + losses to BCS schools won't cut it either. Unfortunetly the difference between losing by 20 or 40 points to a top BCS school us usually depth. Texas manhandled us and it didn't even seem as though they broke a sweat! That's where its tough to get the occaisional win over top programs; and we've had too few to brag about. But tell me; what have your "big" wins been. The nice thing about being 1-17 over the past two years is that you can only get better.....right?

I am actually pulling for Sunbelt schools as a whole whenever they aren't playing C-USA schools (the conference UCF is in).

I'm surprised at the downyears FAU and Troy are having but I believe that you guys have much more upside than the MAC and should steal their spot in the GMAC bowl sooner than later.

You mentioned that this program is on the rise. Can you give any specifics or indicators?

Why are you comparing offenses to offenses and defenses to defenses? They don't go up against each other.

A good stats analysis, this early in the year, would examine your offense ranking versus our defensive ranking (and visa versa) and then take a look at how each unit played against opposing units (from earlier games) and their offensive and defensive ranking. But, hey!...that's just me.
