LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana wide receiver Derrick Smith and strong safety Johnny Felders were named Sun Belt Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their efforts this past Saturday vs. Northwestern State.

Smith tallied three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing, marking the first three-TD performance by a Cajun since Fred Stamps tied a school record with three touchdown receptions at Middle Tennessee on November 15, 2003.

The true freshman from Fort Lauderdale had five catches for 64 yards, including TD catches of 18 and 25 yards, and one touchdown rush for seven yards. All three of Smith’s touchdowns came on third down situations.

Felders led the Cajuns defense with seven tackles (including a team-high four solo’s). He posted his first career interception with a pick in the Cajuns end zone with UL holding a slim seven-point third quarter lead. The Pine Grove native then recovered a fumble at the Cajuns one-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

The SBC Defensive POW honor is just the second for the Cajuns, as CC Brown was the first Cajuns recipient back on October 27, 2003. It is the fourth time that Louisiana has earned two POW awards in the same week and the first time UL has won offensive and defensive POW in the same week.
