LOUISIANA La. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajun football team hadn't had a 544-yard total offense game in regulation in over four seasons, prior to Saturday night.
After the Cajuns ran and passed their way to that total in a 49-28 home-opening victory over Northwestern State, offensive line coach Ron Hudson knew why.
"We finally had five guys playing as a unit," Hudson said Sunday. "We hadn't had the five that we figured on ready to go before Saturday, and they were feeding off each other."
That Cajun front didn't allow a sack and gave quarterback Jerry Babb time to hit eight of his first 11 passes and his last six in a row, on the way to an 18-of-28, 222-yard, three-touchdown night in only three quarters.
More impressively, that group helped natural freshman Tyrell Fenroy and sophomore squadman Abdule Levier rush for 163 and 92 yards respectively, with Levier scoring two second-half touchdowns as UL rallied from a 21-20 halftime deficit.
"The offensive line did a great job," said Fenroy, who popped into the Demon secondary several times on the way to a 10.9 rushing average for the game. "I just ran off their blocks as best I could."
The front wall was boosted by the return of sophomore tackle Jesse Newman, who had missed the first two games with a knee injury. His availability allowed the rest of the unit to shift back to their normal positions, after several moves in the first two weeks.
