Dr. A this past Saturday spoke with the Allumni Association. He said that Blackhams restrooms had just been refurbished last year! Renovations would be minimal but would ATLEAST included 1) New Scoreboards, 2) Using a new chemical to clean the building inside and out getting rid of stains, and 3) small cosmetic and functional changes would be made from within. Monies to ultimately come from the feds he hoped!!

Great stuff!! We could play some games in Blackham, following that an improved Blackham would make a great practice facility and could also be rented out for more functions. An improved Blackham may even work for NIT games when the Cajundome is tied up. (but, what the heck is the NIT anyway) Is the NIT still in existance???

  3. UL Basketball Men's team to play early season 2005 games at former home

There may be uncertainty over when the University of Louisiana's men's basketball team will get back into its Cajundome home, but as of Wednesday there's no uncertainty on an alternative site.

UL interim athletic director David Walker said funding had been approved to prepare Blackham Coliseum to host the Ragin' Cajuns' early season games for the 2005-06 season.

Walker said UL would likely play its Nov. 10 exhibition opener and its three scheduled December home games at Blackham, the Johnston Street facility that was UL's basketball home from 1950-85.

UL President Ray Authement approved emergency funding for the building Wednesday.

"Dr. Authement gave us the money to help bring it up to speed and let us play there," Walker said. "Since there's no way to know an exact date on the Cajundome, we needed to make sure we had a decent place to play."

The 12,000-seat Cajundome, where UL has played since 1985, is being used as a shelter for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. As of Wednesday, Cajundome Director Greg Davis said approximately 1,200 evacuees were housed at the 'Dome.

Cajun head coach Robert Lee said Wednesday he was not concerned about the temporary loss of his team's Cajundome home facility. The Cajuns regularly use Blackham for practice.

"I never really got into whether it was important to practice where you play," Lee said. "A good team ought to be able to win wherever it plays. We've won 46 out of our last 50 games at the Cajundome and we've had a lot of times when we didn't practice there, so that hasn't been an issue for us."

It'll take playing one game there and people will ask why in the heck did we have to play in Blackham.

The last game that I remember selling out at the Cajun Dome was the Loyola-Marymount game on ESPN. I was there and it was not half as exciting as games in Blackham.

If it is good enough for Duke, then it is good enough for us. (Although I can't stand Duke)

Spend the money and they will come.

You know, we wouldn't be having a discussion about this, or any other topic where money is essentially the issue, if we had an ATHLETIC FOUNDATION

A UL game has never sold out the Cajundome. We did come pretty close for that game, though.

Now that all of the evacuees are out of the Cajundome, you think this will change anything?

I read in the paper the other day that Greg Davis expects the Cajundome to be closed for at least 30-60 days after the evacuees leave. That is the time it will take to sanitize & fix mechanical problems with the dome.

I guess we will see. After Rita passes, will evacuees be allowed back into the Cajundome?
