LAFAYETTE -- The Lafayette Little League team will receive a heroes' welcome Sunday afternoon at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette baseball complex.

Marc Mouton, a Lafayette City-Parish Councilman who has been involved with Little League for several years, said the gates will open to the public for a free celebration at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Ceremonies honoring the team will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The players of the 2005 Lafayette Little League team made the first trip for a Lafayette team to the Little League World Series tournament in Williamsport, Pa., last week.

The team pulled off a pair of come-from-behind victories in the opening round, before being eliminated by the team from Hawaii.

Mouton said the players, coaches and families will be flying home today, but organizers wanted to give the 11-and-12-year-olds on the team some rest before the celebration.

"We want to give them an opportunity to sleep and get their legs back under them," he said.
