That breeze motorists felt while creeping through 5 o'clock traffic on Congress Street on Wednesday was a sigh of relief from Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns.
The MRI on offensive tackle Jesse Newman's right knee revealed a sprain, a diagnosis far better than the worst fears raised when he was felled in last Saturday's scrimmage.
Newman wasn't in action in Wednesday's final preseason scrimmage, and he will be held out of the Sept. 3 season opener at Texas, but he is expected to return to action for the Cajuns before long.
"Jesse Newman is a good player, and a young player," offensive line coach Ron Hudson said of the sophomore standout. "He is a valuable part of our team. You never know 'til you get the pictures back what you're going to find. Some guys are more flexible than others. It's good for us to know, and it's really good for him to know how serious it is.
"He will be back in the lineup. In the meantime, it gives us a chance to work other guys in there."
Hudson will continue patching together his offensive line, but injuries in that unit have at least enabled the Cajuns to discover new faces.
"We're going through growing pains," Hudson acknowledged after the scrimmage. "As an offense, and on the whole unit, we've been rolling guys in and out of there. That can affect you a little bit.
"But when someone goes down and we're moving guys around, you find out who wants to play. They go out and get the opportunity to show what they can do. They want the chance to earn playing time.
