Thread: Knee Braces for Offensive Lineman

I have no clue what our operating budget is for football; but I would hope that they at least have this in the budget. Too easy for a guy to just get rolled on and bam, there goes his season. Watch virtually ANY major D-1A football game and just count the number of linemen that are wearing the braces. Ditto for NFL. Its becoming odd that teams do not use these protective devices nowadays. Surely our staff doesn't think it is a worthless investment  I'd be shocked if Jesse doesn't have one on when he returns. Just my 2 cents.

Well guys I don't know if you know this but we have another lineman out with a knee injury. Zach Leger sprained his left knee in yesterday's scrimmage on the third to last play. Looks like the last few plays of the scrimmages are bad luck. Same thing happened to Jesse Newman.
Now we have the Canandian Bacon(Jesse Newman) and the Cajun Bacon(Zach Leger) out for a few games. Not only these guys but Will Chance and Brandon Cox have had knee injuries in the last couple of weeks.
Personally, I will do everything in my power to speak to the powers that be to try and get knee braces for our lineman. If I could afford it I would purchase some for all the lineman. This is something I can not pull off alone but I will purchase some for my son (Zach Leger). I encourage all parents to get involved and try and get UL to purchase knee braces and if that doesn't work then buy your kid what he needs.

If UL could afford knee brace you would think Justin Venable would be wearing one in the past few years. I have not missed a UL home game in the past 5 years and I have never seen a lineman wear a knee brace for precautionary reasons. If I am correct Morgan is waering a knee brace this year but that is after the fact.

Let me start by saying that Porche is not a doctor. He has been in sports medicine a long time but his view of bracing is obsolete. His theory would be valid if the player wore the brace constantly and his body adapted to the brace taking the load off of his knee. But if the player lifts weights, does agility drills, and other non contact drills without the brace, there will be no adverse effect from the brace whatsoever. As for the cost, I did a google search for Donjoy braces and found this site without much effort. http://www.jointhealing.com/pages/pr...playmaker.html I think that $182.50 is a small pricee to pay for the athlete's piece of mind not to mention having enough linemen to finish the season. If they were bought in bulk, the pricing would only get better. I don't think we can afford not to do it.

I guess my questions would be this:

Since it is only worn in prctice and game situations, does a braced knee EVER become weaker with the brace, than a fully vulnerable knee.

How much unique pressure (and from how many angles) does it take to strengthen a knee?

I'm definitely not a pro or a doctor; but it seems that these braces help more with respect to more "unusual" contact. Contact from the side, getting rolled, etc. I doubt the brace would cause anyone to become "weaker". They work out way too much for this to be the case. Just my opinion.
