Thread: Just a thought from the Nicholls game...

Maybe it's because our band plays at the wrong time. I noticed Blaine Gautier telling the band to shut up at one point and the following play being a loss on a botched handoff.

So what's with the deafening recorded music between plays at Cajun Field? Who came up with this idea? A topic for discussion that came up with some of us old school old guys in the press box last night. Bottom line: Are we just being old fogies? Oh, and at this time, I'm watching Oklahoma St. and Tulsa LIVE at 1:16 a.m., Sunday, 9/18...a game delayed because of weather. Is this insane or not...Not that I'm watching, but that the game is still being played?
If the people want 50 Cent and the Cupid Shuffle, give it to them. BUT let the Pride play it. I love it when marching bands throw in some of that stuff with their traditional stuff. It can be done and done well.

I thought there were a lot of messed up timings on the part of the band, the announcer, the video screen and the "piped in" music. That needs to be worked on big time! At least once early in the game the band was getting the crowd gong and then the DJ music cut in and stopped the crowd from really going. I think it caused a lot of people to just sit on their hands for much of the game. It seemed very confusing. Hard to follow especially while trying to watch a football game. I think in this case, less would be more.

I'm willing to bet money that the music is "juice" that Hud wanted. I'll find out tomorrow.

I'm with you. It also bothers me that they play over the band constantly. We just come off looking small time, as one guy I know used to say, 'TRY-ing.'

And it's LOUD. Loud to the point that I suspect OSHA would shut it down if anyone ever dropped a dime (there's an outdated expression) on us. You can't hear yourself talking to the person next to you.

I'm an old f*rt (don't forget, however, we get the big money from old f*rts) but I didn't watch the highlights clip at the beginning of the game because I didn't even want to look at the media board. From what I could tell looking around the crowd, most of the other people were trying to ignore it, too.

First of all, the only marker of a big time program is a big time crowd. Period. That's it.

We've been blasting loud music for several years now. It wasn't bringing anyone in before. Find me one person in the audience who says, "I came because it FEELS like a big-time crowd."

For me, the big-time programs all have their own personality, they each have their own style. It's not like you have a checklist that says
    [ ] Smoke on entrance
[ ] Cannon for each touchdown
[ ] Announcer who leads cheers
    [ ] Deafening music
[ ] Obnoxious fans, many shirtless with body paint
    [ ] Cheezy hand sign
[ ] And check to make sure we're copying anything else we think a 'big' school does

But dang if every mid-major and 1AA school out there isn't running down that check list.

The point is to GET PEOPLE INTO THE GAME. Our culture is different. People will show up:
    a) to be around other people
    b) to hang out with their friends
    c) to see a decent product

Look at the crowd last night. THAT WAS AFTER A 1-1 START, PLAYING A 1AA SCHOOL. We don't need all the junk.

Just play well, and build on the strengths our community already has. Sheesh.

I don't mind your other points, but if students want to dress up and paint their chest let them do it. The piped in music would never have been a problem if our band had taken control of the stadium for years. But they have been medicore, thus they were replaced.

You do have a great point. I guess we have to remember, the band has never had to entertain a full house. This is a new experience for those students also. I will get better. We need to get that assistant band director more involved with gameday management of the band. He did a great job at the basketball game last year, especially when they were qued to play "Forget you" after a bad call by the officials. Classic!!!

I can confirm that the music and how often it was played was exactly what Hud wanted.
