Thread: Can't Wait for Baseball!

  1. UL Baseball Can't Wait for Baseball!

Summer league's are drawing to an end, Fall Ball will be here soon, then the '06 campaign throws out the first pitch. I enjoy watching all these young men develop daily. It's like Coach Robe's philosphy - and the same I preach to all three of my sons - be proud of what you've done in the past, but it's just that - in the past, a memory. What matters is showing up today and working hard to get better at whatever it is you are doing. Never quit, never relax, never give up, NEVER BE SATISFIED! Let's PLAY BALL!

  5. UL Baseball Robichaux has unique blend of experience

When the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun baseball team begins its official fall practice session Monday, it will be at the same time experienced and youthful.

Head coach Tony Robichaux expects 49 players at Moore Field at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Included in that group are 13 Cajun lettermen and 12 other players with either junior college or four-year schools on their baseball resume'.

But also in that group are 24 freshmen and sophomores whose competitive experience consists only of high school play.

"It's a unique blend," Robichaux said. "We've got a lot of first-timers and redshirts, and then there's some veterans and guys who have been here before."

It's by design, too. Last year Robichaux and assistant coach/recruiting coordinator John Szefc put as much effort into bringing standout freshmen as they did junior college products into the program. Robichaux said the same will be true when this year's recruiting class is inked in November.

It paid off last spring with the performances of catcher Jonathan Lucroy and pitcher Hunter Moody among others in their natural freshman season.

"We didn't want to go all freshmen because sometimes the learning curve takes a while," Robichaux said. "By keeping a good mix, you keep some age with us and you don't get too young."

Even the young will be experienced by the time the fall schedule is over. The Cajuns will work out six days a week, and will get right into intrasquad games beginning Friday through Sunday. If all goes as planned, those intrasquad games will be extended to Thursday-Sunday for the second week and continue through Nov. 6. Many of those dates will include doubleheaders.

"A lot of times, we'll give a lot of the veterans off the second game of a doubleheader and play mostly a freshman game," Robichaux said. "That way, we can stop the game, do some teaching."

After that, there's the annual Red-White World Series beginning Monday, Nov. 7, a best-of-seven series between a divided squad that wraps up Nov. 13.

Practices begin at 2:30 p.m. weekdays and noon on weekends.
