Blue is not on the team. He will go to a JUCO closer to home.

Bird, how about an assessment of the pitching staff for the upcoming season? I think the staff can be great in two years, but this season might be rather trying.

But why? Was he not happy here? Was he just home sick?

  6. UL Baseball Freshmen shine in opening baseball practices

Head coach Tony Robichaux expected his veterans to begin fall practice ready to go.

He also expected his junior college and transfer players to do good things early, because of their age and maturity.

What he didn't expect when the University of Louisiana baseball squad began full-scale fall drills was the performance of the first-time freshman class.

"Usually you have one or two of the freshmen that get out and get going and a lot of the others trailing behind," Robichaux said Sunday after the squad finished up an intrasquad doubleheader. "But all of them have shown up early. They're not making a lot of mistakes, which says something for our recruiting process and signing a higher caliber of freshmen."

The Cajun squad opened its fall practice Monday and began its series of intrasquad games Friday with a "tee" game before putting pitchers on the mound for doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. The intrasquad schedule will increase to Friday through Sunday this week and will eventually extend to Thursday-Sunday.

The heavy schedule of intrasquad games will provide all of the 49 active roster players to see significant time before the Red-White World Series in early November and the cutdown to the regular-season roster just before the end of the fall semester. That's especially important to the 22 freshmen on the roster - 16 of whom were playing high school ball only a few months ago.

"The high school baseball schedule's not a grind. This is a grind," Robichaux said. "Part of the reason we do this is to see who handles it mentally and whose bodies let them handle it physically."
