If the athlete knows in advance that their is a possibility of greyshirting, there is nothing wrong with it. (I think that was the case with Smith).
If the possibility is not brought up until the fall semester, then its the most underhanded tactic in Division I athletics and schools that practice it should be penalized.
well, in a way we did the same thing with Nick Smith. Our old staff offered him a scholarship and he committed then our new staff came in and asked if he'd be willing to greyshirt (and they waited until right before signing day to ask) so he went and signed with McNeese. And I'd be worried if we'd be screwed with our relationship with AHS b/c of Nick Smith. Because he seemed upset about it so I'm sure some of his friends are too.
Different staff, new coaches have the right to evaluate their own kids. So no, its not the same thing in my book. Second, Acadiana has had a number of good athletes over the years, can you name the ones that signed with UL over the past five or six seasons? I would like to see UL keep as many kids locally, but for every athlete like Nick Smith there is a Hollier that UL did wait on. His decision was to sign with a program that might win one game this season. UL has a lot of work to do in this area, but Nick Smith is an another example of UL being held to one standard while other programs get a pass.
