Completely agree. Not being able to kick past the 20 yd line, dropping 7 passes, throwing screen passes into the grass, missing open receivers, RBs not blocking blitzing LBs, O line blowing assignments, and blowing coverages have nothing to do with being out classed.. These are the things I'm concerned about. The good thing is, all of these mistakes are fixable, as per Coach Hud.
Glad our offense scored more points than our defense. I was very disappointed in the offense in the first half. The numerous dropped passes, poor passes, and blocking breakdowns were not good. Maybe the OSU defense improved a lot over last year. I mean, they were decent but not elite like their offense. Perhaps they've shored that up. Glad to see Harris and Griffin (and the other first year guys) get some real game experience. I liked that we DID play to the end and not let things just slide. I think our defense was about where we feared it was. There was some spot improvements and some major breakdowns. Let's see if we get the necessary 2nd game improvements against a lesser (than OSU) team. Kent State should be more on our level, so a repeat of these problems (even if they don't beat us by 27), would be cause for concern.
UL didn't score 34 points at all last year.
Like Hud said a team that didn't give up.
I'm happy for the future.
My main concern is going to be the LB situation. Basically having DBs playing LB. When teams can run with power, there won't be much we can do. Many times tonight OSU would get their OL guys on our LB's and the Safeties were left making tackles 15 yds downfield.
I think most other aspects are really fixable.
Could someone be so kind as to summarize coach Hud's post game comments?
Thanks!
I wonder how many times OSU will score more than 50 points this year. I'm thinking it'll happen a few more times at least. Good thing Wheeden wasn't really "on" tonight! Haha! He had a few really bad throws ...
I agree with you. When it counted, the offense couldn't do anything. That is a concern. However, It's just the first game and we'll see how they come back next week. I'll let others make excuses, I'm just going by what I see on the field and making comments on that. There may be reasons for a poor performance, but while the game is going on, I'm more focused on what our team is doing to win the game.
I'm happy with the outcome. Blaine got the hang of it towards the end of the game (too late, I know). Griffen and Harris look great. Surgent still does his thing on special teams. Bentley is making the plays we need him to make, and our team is overall playing tough football, all four quarters long. We're going in the right direction, this season might not live up to our expectations of the need to win NOW, but we will get there on the foundation being set on this first game.
The same can't be said for North Texas, they just laid an egg.
