Smoke from those marsh fires in New Orleans has made its way to Acadiana. Wednesday night's sunset cast a hazy, pink glow over much of the area.
"It's just a thick haze, almost choking, the smell is out of control," said Jamie Boudreaux of Lafayette.
The haze was accompanied by a distinct, burning-smell from those fires more than 100 miles away, which could pose a problem for some with breathing problems.
"Wood smoke can cause problems with nasal, throat and lung irritation," said Lafayette physician Dr. Ron Jenkins.
Dr. Jenkins says those with pulmonary diseases like asthma, are most at risk for irritation from the smoke.
"You need to basically try to filter the air, remain inside, keep your air conditioners running, do everything you can to decrease exposure to the polluted air if you can," he said.
The haze is expected to stay in place through Thursday morning, and could begin to dissipate by the afternoon.
