Loose them all and take the conference.
I would agree with that, however we are most likely looking at finishing the year around the .500 mark. In which case I would think that wins over a top ten team and a quality PAC whatever would be more beneficial to recruiting.
I could care less as long as we win 7 or more.
That's exactly where I hope we see improvement. Consistency. Play though against opponents we are underdogs to and beat the teams we should, especially at home, ie WKU last year. I'm really hoping Coach Hud will bring that brand of football to the Cajuns. We have had a history of playing those good teams very well, and lay an egg the next week. Beat A&M, have a losing season. Beat K state, struggle against the Sun Belt. Too many of those to mention. Consistency.
I'm looking for you to consistently show up in Lafayette for the games this year. That's exactly where I hope we see improvement. Consistency. Play tough against opposition opposing your trip to Lafayette. I'm really hoping you will bring that brand of fanship to the Cajuns. You have a history of coming to Lafayette and tailgating very well, and laying an egg the next week. Make Game 1, have an excuse for Game 2. Make Game 3, struggle to be there for Game 4. Too many of those to mention. Consistency.
Take care of conference games and build your name on consistency, especially if it means getting to bowl games. I don't think ULM made much of a name for themselves beating Alabama some years back nor did we in beating K-State a couple of years ago. However, you win the conference and people start writing a lot more about you in preaseason mags and recruits tend to take a more serious look at helping build a program.
Understandable and I agree. However, I do want to contradict one thing you said to make your point about the 96 season. That year we did beat A&M and did have a losing record, however, that was also arguably our toughest schedule in history so I have be impressed with the amount of wins we had based on that alone.
Although, beating OSU and losing to Nicholls are both HIGHLY unlikely, if we managed to beat OSU and Kent, I could see us having a rough go with Nicholls because that would be our letdown game (a week before conference, and we just upset a top 10 team, and a decent mac team, both on the road). Don't get me wrong, I don't think that would mean we would lose the game, but we might end up in a dogfight.
With all that said, I don't think we'll have to worry about that situation.

That is one "worry" I would like to have!
Square Head
1996 was by far our most impressive schedule and we faired well with a 5-6 record with close losses to Houston and UAB. That win over Texas A&M should have been UL's springboard to a better program and a better conference. We were competing with an beating teams in this and other years like Memphis, E. Carolina, Houston, N. Illinois, Colorado State, Tulsa, UAB, Rice, and Tulane. Instead, athletic funding was cut, we went to the Sun Belt instead of CUSA, and our program has never recovered, UNTIL NOW, under new leadership.
