Thread: Advertiser preview

    Default Advertiser preview

Anyone worried that the coverage of the Cajuns in The Advertiser would slip since both Josh Parrott and Brady Aymond are moving on need not do so. Today's preview of the season by Tim Buckley is excellent. You can tell the guy has done his homework as to our past and is quite comprehensive in reviewing our team for this coming season. He did an outstanding job in preparing the preview.

I hope seeing is believing for those who doubted whether the DA would continue its quality coverage of the Cajuns. If you haven't already, it might be a nice time to send Tim an email thanking him for the in-depth work given he got here just a week ago.

Boomer, I just wanted to add some reality to the situation given that you tend to live in the moment. This was the season preview for Cajun football. (LSU's runs Monday.) It's totally unrealistic to expect Tim to provide as much content (basically six stories) on the Cajuns or for the DA to give them as much prominence every day of the year. Prep sports, the Saints and LSU are also going to get time as the focus on the front page (known as "centerpieces" and "focals" in the newspaper world) moving forward. You'll probably still be disappointed when it happens, but I figured I'd let you know.

why is it so unrealistic to expect the prominence of the cajuns on the front page? i can understand that we're not going to get 6 stories too often, but i don't understand why we're not going to be prominent, i.e.,"centerpiece", everyday. especially during the season. the other teams will still get their coverage, but why give them prominence. the saints coverage is actually a little more understanding since it's difficult to get a hold of a times-picayune. but that other team? really? if fans want to read coverage that bad, they should buy an advocate. why feature them in the "centerpice?"

Well JP we will just have to agree to disagree----I think that you are wrong and that UL should ALWAYS get top billing---If you have this mind set, I am glad that you will not be our beat writer and that Tim will have a more expanded ----ergo front page or Ceterpiece/focal mindset for UL Athletics---I certainly wish the very best for you and the family in Houston---God has obviously given you some talent boy --now go use it!!! When the influx of peripheral (non UL) ink comes I along with others will voice our negative opinions--some in posts others in cancelled subscriptions---Although mine is always of the former some R- PAGINers have opted for the latter!!! Go see Luke at the Ragin Cajun on Rickmond and say hi ---you will enjoy looking at all the old yearbooks!!!!!

If you read my post, it mentioned prominence in the form of daily "centerpieces", meaning that the Cajuns wouldn't be the main photo every day. It's never like that here from what I've been told, even when I covered the Cajuns. In fact, no publication in the country has the same subject as the centerpiece every day. Those centerpiece packages are for features or game stories, so it changes depending on the content for that particular day.

Sometimes there's not quality art to run with the Cajun story for the day. Many times the story stripped across the top of the front page just has a mug shot or no art at all because it's more breaking news than anything else. Many, many times that's a Cajun story. See the recent Chaz Hebert signing with the Yankees story. And whenever LSU has been the centerpiece, say the day after a game between two top-25 programs, the Cajuns are almost always stripped across the top as the lead story. You might not like it, but some people in this community do buy newspapers to read about LSU.

Other examples: A high school football feature will likely be the centerpiece photo every Friday with games that night. And high school football will likely be the centerpiece photo with games from the previous night and the Cajuns getting a story on the front and at least a page of info inside where the rest of that story continues. The Cajuns would likely follow as Sunday's centerpiece, then the Saints on Monday after their game. The Tuesday-Thursday sections are a bit more up in the air in terms of what is the main art that day.

Some of you are forgetting that prep coverage is extremely important. A larger segment of the community is involved with so many more schools and those people actually living in this community. And anything about the Saints is gobbled up by people in this state, especially with them becoming a winner in recent years.

Boomer, sometimes I just want to slam my head against the wall whenever I read your posts. (And I say that knowing that some of you probably do the same whenever I post here.)

You don't have to look at this from outside of your Cajun sunglasses because it's not your job, but there are other topics worth covering in the daily section. Please see my above response about "centerpiece" packages and the issues that come into play there in terms of photos, story placement, etc.

Everyone here knows that you think it's wrong for the Cajuns to not get top billing every day. Believe me, I totally get it. But the fact that you're questioning my "mindset" after 3.5 years of busting my butt to improve the daily coverage of the university, and in many ways neglecting aspects of my personal life to do so, just makes you sound absolutely delusional.

If any of you would like to continue this conversation, might I suggest we do so in a personal message. I'd rather not take away from Tim's work anymore in this thread than I already have today (although my intent, again, was just to provide some background into how some decisions are made in the newsroom).

Yikes, this could get ugly. Cajuns getting top billing everyday from Aug-Nov? Sounds nice, but isn't that overkill. What about a Saints last second Monday Night win? What if Acadiana is going for another State Championship? What if local product Drew Alleman kicks a game winning field goal for LSU? Lafayette is not a one horse town. It is a mix of people with different interest. The DA should try to cater to all of its customers.

Lets just enjoy the season and the excellent coverage we get. If we are 3-9 again we may be asking the DA to stop featuring us so prominently.

The fact that UL's preview runs on Sunday and LSU's runs on Monday speaks much louder than the words of anyone on this board. Thanks to the DA.
