Thread: Masson, Gautier hoping for answer

  1. Default Masson, Gautier hoping for answer

But Chris Masson and Blaine Gautier are willing to wait while UL coach Mark Hudspeth decides who will take the first snap when the Ragin' Cajuns open their 2011 season at Oklahoma State, the nation's No. 9-ranked team according to the Associated Press ...

I like that these guys aren't saying "we really want to go in there and have a good game and be able to compete." Instead they are saying "we want to go in there in WIN."

It can be like a been there done that thing-----the first half against this team last year we were as good--so I think the intimidation factor is not as huge as it normally would have been against a stronger conference opponent!!!!

Thanks Tim, good article. I think we can all be assured that both will get plenty of playing time. To me, it will be interesting to watch how Coach Hud handles the QB situation. Sometimes coaches press on with what they believe to be right, even though it may be obvious that it's not working. There's that "I'm right" attitude that some have and it clouds their decision making. I want to see if Coach Hud is a dynamic Coach, one who can change based on the conditions he's given. If both of these QB's can move the team, we will be better off in our ability to give the defense more to look at. If either one is much better than the other, especially in protecting the ball, then Coach Hud needs to stick with that guy on the majority of snaps.

Masson vs Gautier is just like what MSU did last year with Tyler Russell vs Chris Relf. I can see why Coach Hud real high on Blaine. He reminds him of Relf. I don't know but I think he will go with Masson & then work in Gautier for the rest of the year

If Masson is named the starting QB:
It means HUD is either giving him senior respect, or because HUD believes the O-line will be serviceable/good.

If Gautier is named the starting QB:
You can bet that our O-line will again be a gigantic issue.

If the quarterback has as little time to throw as he did last year, then we better hope Gautier is the man.

I will say though that it sounds like our starting OL could be good, but with limited depth.

If he waits to name a starter on game day I see him going with Masson too. When neither QB is outperforming the other, you gotta go with experience.

On the other hand, if a guy was given two years to start and he still hasn't distanced himself from the other qbs, is that a good thing?

I don't think its a lack of his success as Hud has said Masson has played really well. I think it has more to do with Gautier and the skills that he has as he has looked really good this offseason as well. so yes, its a good thing and I think there is some lip service from Hud in there. I'm not a big fan of the two QB system which is what it looks like we may do as at some point, it disrupts your flow and players seem to always be looking over their shoulder when a mistake is made. That can hurt their ability to execute as much as anything when their confidence is shot and they are afraid to make mistakes.

the question is.... if Hud thinks this is a possible rebuilding year and looking to the future, and both QB's are fairly even, do you go with the QB that can play next year? Or if you think we can bowl this year and the QB's are neck and neck, do you go with the Jr who comes back next year.

I think, if they're that close you start the Jr for future experience. I want a bowl this year, but I wanna build a program not a flash in the pan.
