It didn't take the Louisiana Lady Cajuns long to establish control on Thursday night as they marched to a 60-42 victory at Prairie View A&M in non-conference women's basketball action. Coach J. Kelley Hall's squad, which visits Sam Houston State on Saturday, improved to 5-1 on the season while dropping the Lady Panthers to 1-3 before 907 fans. "It was tough out of the chute, but in the last seven or eight minutes of the first half we got control," said Hall, whose team fell behind 4-0 with some early turnovers but led 36-28 at half and limited PV to 14 second-half points. "We made some adjustments at halftime and then pretty much shut them out. We played outstanding defense." UL held Prairie View to 15-of-55 shooting, registered 15 steals and out-rebounded the Lady Panthers 56-36, helping the Cajuns overcome a 23-of-65 shooting night that included 4-of-22 on 3-pointers. WOODLANDS, Texas - With one more step, the Louisiana Lady Cajuns will finally be able to take a breather and turn their focus to final exams for the fall semester. The Cajuns play their fourth game in seven days at 7 p.m. tonight against Sam Houston State in nearby Huntsville, hoping to add a sixth victory of the campaign after opening with a loss at SMU. Coach J. Kelley Hall drilled his team on shooting in Friday's practice after the Cajuns made 23-of-65 shots (35.4 percent) in Thursday's 60-42 victory at Prairie View A&M. "We've got to make our shots on the road," Hall said. "We're working on that. But, we played outstanding defense against Prairie View and out-rebounded them 56-36." Junior forward Yolanda Jones is settling into a comfortable groove in early-season games, with double digits in both scoring and rebounding suddenly the expectation. HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Make that six victories in a row for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun women. Coach J. Kelley Hall's squad used another solid defensive effort to propel a 62-40 win at Sam Houston State on Saturday, improving its record to 6-1 on the season. Sam Houston State (now 1-3) shot just 17-of-55 from the field (30.9 percent) and the visitors out-rebounded the Bearkats by a 47-32 margin before 228 fans at Johnson Coliseum. It's the longest winning streak in Hall's fourth season running the program, as well as the longest at UL since the 1987-88 Cajuns won nine in a row. The smothering Cajun defense held SHSU to 14 points in the first half, and once the visitors claimed a 30-14 lead at the break it made the second half largely a matter of playing steady with a lead. Sonora Edwards had an outstanding game for UL, hitting 5-of-7 shots (3-of-3 3-pointers), scoring a game-high 15 points and leading all rebounders with 10. HUNTSVILLE, Texas-Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns continued to win basketball games with their defense, topping Sam Houston State on Saturday 62-40. The win was the Cajuns sixth straight, the longest winning streak under head coach J. Kelley Hall, and the longest streak since the 1987-88 team won nine in a row. The Cajuns built a 16-point lead at halftime with their smothering defense. UL held SHS to six field goals in the first half, including a 0-for-11 performance from three-point range, en route to a 30-14 lead after 20 minutes. SHS had just two points for the first 11:17 of the game. The Bearkats were able to hang with the Cajuns to start the second half, thanks to a brief defensive lapse by UL.
