Thread: Two sides of the same coin

  1. Louisiana Two sides of the same coin

    Both are legal

I think the one on the right sends the preferred message.

    I don't like either one.

Well that's fair, because I'm not pushing either one.

But I was curious if you see a LEGAL difference between the 2 logo designs?

Legal? Not sure just what you are after here but I can't see where legalities come in except that that other university up north might look at it differently.

    THE CAJUNS ARE LOUISIANA!!!!!!!!!!

One says: UL-Lafayette but all you remember is Lafayette
One says: University of Louisiana-L but all you remember is Louisiana

If partial initials are legal, (and they are) the two logos say the exact same thing, but convey very different meanings.

The L is assumed in both examples, one by the underscoring of Lafayette, and the other through prominence.

    Turbine,

What do you mean "legal"? What is the specific statute that you are referring to when you ask which logo is "legal"? If I know the statute then I can give you an educated answer.

    P.S.

I don't particularly care for the look of either.

Looks like the big T used by Tennessee

Tennessee isn't the only school that uses the letter of their state as a logo. There are a bunch more that use the letter of the school, but these are the ones with a State connection.

    Tennessee
    Virginia
    Connecticut
    Minnesota
    Wisconsin
    Missouri
    Nebraska
    Utah
    Arizona
    Oregon
    Washington
    Hawaii
    Utah State

I think the U_L looks better, but you're right - the main read is Lafayette, and if you're not familiar with UL "L" I suppose it's possible to confuse it with Lafayette University, whose logo I'd presume is a L-U.

I think they should just go with an "L" - if you guys wanna be know as "Louisiana" it would be a start, and since it also stands for Lafayette you'd probably be able to justify it to whatever governing body isnsists on calling you UL-L.

Personally, my favorite logo you guys have come up with in recent years is the chili pepper - no text, just the pepper. Not universally recognizable, but subtle and distictive. Couldn't find my kid a hat with it on it last time out and had to settle for the UL design.

Personally, I think the one on the right says that we're too desperate for the distinguished " University of Louisiana". The big "U" with the state of Louisiana in the middle of the consanant, that has a star locating Lafayette is noticeably the best choice. It's simple, it's sweet, and downright awesome!! Go UL!!!
