In Iberia Parish, a trial is underway for the murder of 72 year old Sidney Long, who was shot and killed inside his New Iberia Gun & Pawn shop back in 2008.
Defendent Easton Francisco's trial for first-degree murder began Tuesday. He waived his right to appear in court for proceedings, but entered a not guilty plea through his public defender.
Long's family did initially want the death-penalty in the case, but back in 2009 a judge ruled Francisco is not eligible for the death penalty, because he has mild mental retardation.
Among the prosecution witnesses called to testify Tuesday was Akeem Evans, who pled guilty to manslaughter in Long's death earlier this year. Evans testified that he and Francisco both shot Long multiple times.
Prosecutors tell KATC they will call as many as nine witnesses when court resumes Wednesday morning.
