I have heard several things, all in school did excellent this past summer. All are eligible to start the year, Maurice Barksdale, Valentino Hart and Ed Turner have been the surprises this early fall semester on the court. Maurice has been able to show some really great handles, leadership and passing ability over the last few weeks in pick-up ball with the team.
According to sources close to the program, it has been said that Chris Cameron hass really noticed a positive change in Micahel Southall, and is really looking forward to playing along side him for their Final year. Other SOurces has said that the early season starting 5 is looking to encompass, Cameron, Southall, Lucien Graham, Ed Turner and Dwayne Mitchell. The next 5 will include in random order, JC Fields, Maurice Barksdale, Spencer Ford, Valentino Hart, and Derek Gray--Adam James has shown signs of promise and with other able bodies for him to share time with will probably prosper and not get in so much foul trouble.
Ross Mouton has really matured and has apparently taken the Red-Shirt possibility positively. He has realized that the coaches have his best intrest at heart and would like to keep him around another year instead of wasting his scholarship and time, they want him to really get to play more and feel with a little time, he would be a much greater contributor and possses good leadership qualities.
Many of the new players are fitting in quite nice and if all the players gel, and play their roles, the talent level this year is deeper than last, the size is larger and the overall speed is probably about the same. The athletic aspect is a step down, but the offensive production could be much higher. The defensive presence will be a taller, more of an inside presence than last year, but the agressive defensive wing play from Hamilton and Greene wont be as present. Look for the Cajuns not to average as much in turnovers as they did this past year, but look for offensive, and defensive rebounds to increase.
Many people have inquired about Ed Turner, all I can say is he is wiry, thinner, and a little more aggressive than Tiras Wade, with the same ability to score. Maurice Barksdale is a true point guard, and JC Fields and Valentino Hart will surprise people. The 4 newcomers and Graham, will give the Cajuns a new look, but same agressive style as 2004-2005 Big Dance atttenders. My prediction is SBC CHamps again, with the high possibility of At Large if we lose in the tourney finals, with quality wins over LSU, Tennessee, and Charlotte! A very exciting team, one with good leadership and great potential to make some crazy things happen!
