Recent wet weather in Acadiana has been welcomed news for many farmers, who've endured a very dry spring. However, farmers in other parts of the state and the country have not been so lucky. In Texas and northern Louisiana, the dry-spell has been a curse for hay farmers, and now they're looking to Acadiana for help.
Although the hay product is down about a third from where it should be, Vince Deshotel, the LSU AgCenter County Agent for St. Landry Parish, says Louisiana farmers might still be able to help.
"For our local farmers we want to make sure that their needs are taken care of but we also want to help out our neighboring states in the event we face this in the future," he said.
If you have extra hay, or anticipate a surplus, call Deshotel at 337-948-0561.
