Any update on Chaz?
If you thought NFL free agency was crazy this year, you haven't seen anything compared to what you will see today. 9 out of the top 10 picks, as well as 23 of the 33 first round picks have not signed yet. MLB is trying to keep signing bonuses down, which is why signing have been down this year. However, MLB is showing signs of allowing teams to sign way above slot. The Royals just signed their 29th round pick for $675,000. As of now, Chaz hasn't signed but the Yankees have only signed 15 of their picks so far.
dios mio
For reference, that is around slot money for the 53rd overall pick.
Plus, around 30 minutes ago, the Yankees signed their 20th round pick Daniel Camerena (Cal HS LHP) for $335,000.
MlB has no control over signing bonuses. Slot amounts are only recommendations. MLB, though, does ask for teams to delay releasing info on signings well above slot until right before the deadline.
That's correct JP, but don't you think it's odd this year that so many top picks haven't signed yet. There's always some that hold on to the deadline, but 23 sounds a bit high. I think there is a little more "suggesting" going on behind closed doors.
P.S. The owners need to quit delaying their vote on the Astros sale. This vote is much easier than the Dodgers debacle.
It is a bit odd, cjr, but we must remember the MLB draft/signing situation is unique to sports. I've reached out to Chaz but have yet to hear from him.
And BOP, thank you. Sometimes great subject matter is all it takes. I'm humbled and honored to share his story. Mr. Handy is a tremendous individual and educator. Our young people need more educators like him.
I guess signing money is all over the place. The Mariners paid their 5th round pick, a HS catcher from Orlando $650,000 today. Slot money for his 153rd pick was $165,000. Go figure.
Have to wait it out for a few more hours
