Dextria Sapp continues UL tradition, Wins Miss Black USA . gets local TV Show

Debbie Delhomme Greene wasn't surprised that Dextria Sapp won the title of Miss Black United States Sunday in Atlanta.

"She's just a natural," said Greene, Miss Louisiana USA 1998.

Neither was Sapp, a 23-year-old University of Louisiana senior and Alexandria native.

"I had a good feeling about it from the beginning," she said. "I met all the contestants and I said to myself, 'It's going to be down to me and Miss California."

Aside from participating in the usual areas of competition you should expect, such as evening wear, swimsuit, talent, the 30 contestants also took part in a fitness challenge.

"That's right up my alley," Sapp said, "being a personal trainer and aerobics instructor at Physiques."

Sapp is no stranger to physically challenging competitions. She and her friend, former Acadiana resident Dorothy Davis, now living in Los Angeles, were runners up in NBC's "Fear Factor: Best Friends," which aired May 2.

Her recent celebrity was not lost on other pageant contestants.

"During dress rehearsal, an ant crawled across the stage and they said to me, 'Dex, are you hungry?'" she recalled, laughing.

Sapp's academic major and job as a physical trainer prepared her for the more athletic portion of the pageant, while her modeling experience came in handy for the more traditional challenges. She has done modeling for Abdalla's and for the Delhomme family business, The Get Wet Shop, which provided Sapp's attire for the swimwear competition, which Sapp won. Sapp can be seen modeling some of the store's merchandise on www.swimdance.com as well as on a billboard for the shop on Congress Street.

The pressure was on for Dextria Sapp, last year’s winner of the Miss Physical Fitness trophy at the Miss Louisiana Hawaiian Tropic finals. Sapp returned to the finals Aug. 11 in Lake Charles. Sapp, a personal trainer and kickboxing in-structor at the City Club at River Ranch, said her reputation was on the line. “I knew what to expect, going into the competition,” Sapp said. “I know what they’re looking for. I said to myself ‘I won this award last year, and I want to win this award this year.’ “I’m a personal trainer and for me to not win this award looks bad. That would not be a good thing. I have a degree in exercise science, so I said I have to win that award.” Sapp’s fitness fame remains intact as she claimed the Miss Physical Fitness trophy for the second straight year in the state Hawaiian Tropic contest held at L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort. The repeat championship adds to Sapp’s list of titles, which include Miss Black USA 2006 and fitness winner in the 2003 Miss Louisiana pageant.
