UL Baseball CWS Trivia Question #3 ...

The NCAA went to a 48-team postseason tournament (eight regionals of six teams) in 1987 and a 64-team postseason tournament in 1999 (sixteen regionals of four teams). If Arizona State defeats Florida tonight, it will mark the sixth time that a non #1 regional seed (1999 -> present) or #3 regional seed or below (1987 -> 1998) has made the final pairing of two in the College World Series. What other schools can claim such a distinction?

One of these is correct, even though the spelling is not.

Wichita State was a #3 seed in 1993 and lost to LSU in the CWS championship game. The Shockers went 3-1 in the CWS that year.

Pepperdine is correct. They were a #3 seed in 1992 when they won the national championship.

LSU was a #1 seed in all of its national championship years ('91, '93, '96, '97, and '00). LSU has never made the final and not won.

Cal State-Fullerton is correct. They actually performed the feat twice. Once in 1992 as a #3 seed and once last season as the national champion (#2 seed).

There is still one more school.

My guess is either 1998 Southern Cal that won it all and either Georgia or Oklahoma State. UGA beat OSU for the title in 1990. If I remember correctly, one of those was a #3 or below.

Southern California was a #1 seed in 1998. In fact, the Trojans were seeded as the #4 team at the CWS in '98.

Georgia and Oklahoma State were both #2 seeds in 1990.
