Justin Morgan walked onto the University of Louisiana at Lafayette baseball team after graduating from East Ascension in 2000.
Five years later, Morgan left the Ragin' Cajuns as one of the three team captains on a Sun Belt Conference champion.
And this past Monday, he continued his story-book journey by flying into the Chicago Cubs minor league camp in Mesa after being selected by the Cubs in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft the previous Wednesday,
Morgan, who was taken with the 1,180th pick overall, was expected to be assigned with the Cubs' organization within a week.
Morgan, a four-year letterwinner at Louisiana, is coming off his best season with the Cajuns. He batted .331 with four home runs and 32 runs batted in after playing in 50 games. He ended his career in memorable fashion, homering in his final at-bat against Alabama in the NCAA Regionals at Tulane's Turchin Stadium June 5.
