Thread: Ex Recruit claims benefits... ( Advertiser Gets Maniacal ) ... other findings

The University of Louisiana athletic department will not contest the four secondary violations handed down by the NCAA in a notice of allegations received Tuesday.

UL interim athletic director David Walker said in a university release that the department agrees with the facts in the allegations and will not request a hearing before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions. Resolution of the case and assessment of penalties will be done through the NCAA's summary disposition process.

"The university will work in cooperation with the NCAA enforcement staff to prepare the Summary Disposition Report, and the report will then be presented to the Infractions Committee," Walker said in the release. "The university will recommend self-imposed penalties and corrective actions that we feel are appropriate to address the violations."

The university received notice Tuesday of four alleged violations, two each in football and men's basketball. The allegations involve certification of eligibility for former basketball player Orien Greene involving correspondence courses, and improper contact by coaches with football players during summer workouts and illegal awarding of T-shirts for performances in fall games and spring drills.

All are considered secondary violations by the NCAA enforcement staff. The summary disposition process may be used since the university does not fall under the repeat-violator provision.

T-SHIRTS????? I'm sure glad that this t-shirt giving business got "nipped in the bud" before it got out of hand. Next thing you know, the coaching staff may have started handing out sweatbands or hats! Just think of how much trouble we'd be in then!!! This seems absolutely absurd. Can anyone tell me how frequent some of these violations are handed out for other schools?

I'm sitting here waiting for "3 1/2 puppies" to call KPEL and apologize to the University and to Coach Lee for his comments when this was first reported... but I'm sure he doesn't have enough class to do so!

Tempest in a t-shirt if you ask me.

Yeah, but we all know its because those t-shirts read:

"If you don't support the Cajuns, move to Baton Rouge"

and since the NCAA is going out of its way to keep people from getting offended, well... you know...

i think if it is given to the whole team it would not have been a problem. The shirts were given based on individual achievments. That technically is against the rules. None of this would have ever been discussed if barry jordan would not have opened his mouth.

Especially since his university of choice hands out Kia's to football players.

I'm sure right now, as I type this, athletic departments across the nation are taking back all of the $7 T-shirts that they've handed out and are now replacing them with $80 plaques. Something that I find odd is that an athletic department cannot hand out T-shirts. Is that all the time or some of the time? And, is it stated that the athlete cannot receive a T-shirt because it is construde as a violation as buying him something, such as a meal? If it is stated that an athlete cannot receive a T-shirt at anytime, how can he receive one during March Madness? Is the NCAA violating it's own rule? I know that this is way out of the box and maybe a stupid question.

Maybe the NCAA's staff needs to get into collecting rents.

"Pac-10 College conference commissioners are investigating the circumstances surrounding the former USC running back's mother and stepfather renting a spacious new home from a prospective sports marketer."

"The controversy concerns a 3,000-square-foot home rented by Denise and LaMar Griffin in Spring Valley, Calif., just outside San Diego, where Bush was a high school standout. The $757,000 house is owned by businessman Michael Michaels who reportedly had plans to set up a sports marketing company built around the marquee college star-turned-pro.

That kind of arrangement could be considered an "extra benefit" and a violation of NCAA rules."
