Recent wet weather in Acadiana has been perfect for mosquitoes, some places seeing a six-fold increase in the summer nuisance.

"Mosquitoes are weather-driven, specifically rainfall," Glenn Stokes with Mosquito Control Contractors Incorporated, which handles mosquito abatement for Lafayette, Acadia and St. Mary Parishes.

MCCI has increased nighttime spraying in those parishes in the last week due to growing numbers of mosquitoes being found in traps. For instance in Lafayette last week, on average MCCI was catching 50 mosquitoes per night in traps; this week that number jumped 600% to 300 mosquitoes per night.

"It could get worse and it probably will get a little worse if we continue to get rain," said Stokes.
