Thread: ...The Beamer Model. After 6 Years: Bustle has 26 wins Beamer had 24

  1. UL Football Bustle is doing better with less than Beamer did with more.

I can't say if Beamer fired anyone or not, but I do know he promoted at least 1 person from within.

After Beamer's 7th year he promoted his quarterbacks/receivers coach to become his offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.

Virginia Tech followed the 2-8-1 record with a 9-3 season.

The person Beamer promoted was a fellow named Bustle.

Which makes one wonder if the OC isn't a bigger problem than we thought. Certainly VT recruited better athletes than we have now; but they also played tougher competition. That said, maybe Bustle should don the headset and make the calls (similar to what Sean Payton is doing in New Orleans). I realize you don't see that often; but if we are struggling to produce a consistent offense (which had sufficient talent), then maybe he should step in if the OC isn't cutting it.

He obviously has experience. Why not. I just hope that his pride doesn't get in the way and that he sees some of the same things we are seeing. I hope he doesn't stay with the same offense, play calling, coaches, etc. because he thinks/knows it will work and would rather "go down with the ship" instead of changing the problems.

Maybe we should hire one, period! I'd vote for getting a president too.

In year 4 RB needs to go 6-5 to keep pace with FB

I'm going on record as saying I think after 4 years Rickey Bustle will have a 1 game lead over Beamer in the total win department.

I predict UL will go 7-4
Not to jump in right in the middle but I think you are comparing apples to oranges since Frank Beamer's Hokies do play in a BCS conference. And the level of competition they've played against is a slight bit tougher.

True, but the reference is to their respective 1st five years.

VT didn't become a member of the Big East until Beamers 5th year at the helm. They were independent for the 26 years prior. In their first year with the Big East they won 5, in the 2nd they won 2, in the 3rd year of the conference they won 9

Kracka, don't you think that Frank had more to work with at VaTech, and being in that conference was just as much a benefit as a challenge to succeed? I think it is comparing small apples to larger ones, but some parallels do exist.

Back when UsL beat aTm, a buddy of mine, always wanting to set the record straight, told me that we would get killed in the SEC. The point he failed to comprehend is that if UL were in the SEC, our program would grow thru the affiliation. Even those right now that don't get a bowl bid, get 9 (count em... 9) bowl money splits (Florida is a little different, I think). That additional revenue alone would make UL leap into the middle of the pack. Tulane even starred in the conference at one time. Tough, but highly regarded, conferences have way more of a benefit to the member than they can ever correctly complain about the competitiveness.

  9. Default Bustle Beamer careers mirror each other . . . sort of

After 6 years Beamer fired 3 assistants
After 5 years Bustle fired 4 assistants

  10. UL Football Sometimes assistants pay price for losses

At the University of Virginia, three members of Al Groh's staff left after the 2005 season to become head coaches. The last assistant to leave Frank Beamer's staff at Virginia Tech for a head job was Rickey Bustle after the 2001 season.

Bustle, who spent 14 years as a Tech assistant, including eight as offensive coordinator, recently completed his fifth season at the University of University of Louisiana.

Under Bustle, 53, the Ragin' Cajuns are 23-35. They were expected to contend for the Sun Belt Conference title this season but finished a disappointing 6-6, and Bustle this week fired four of his assistants, including his offensive and defensive coordinators.

"I wasn't trying to make a statement with this decision, nor was I trying to make anyone the scapegoat," Bustle told the Daily Advertiser of Lafayette. "But if there is a statement to be made, it's that we're trying to improve and that going 6-6 is not good enough."

In 1992, Beamer's sixth season as Tech's coach, his team finished 2-8-1. After the season, at then-Athletic Director Dave Braine's urging, Beamer fired three assistants. The Hokies haven't had a losing season since.

    Default Turbine, i beg you

please tell us something about the great oil bowl team, or bustle being ahead of beamer, or the program heading in the right direction, or running the sun belt table and going to the n.o. bowl. we need it.
