Thread: Cajuns a #2 or a #3 seed? ...

  1. UL Baseball Cajuns a #2 or a #3 seed? ...

    Folks, it is going to be tight. I think the Cajuns could be the last #2 seed in the field. And whether they get that last #2 seed could come down to the game being played right now between Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount for the West Coast Conference Tournament championship and automatic bid.

    Loyola Marymount needs to win the three game series (currently tied 1-1) with Pepperdine (this is the West Coast Conference tournament format) in order to make the field of 64. If they do, yet another school will have its bubble burst as there have been a plethora of upsets in conference tournaments. But if Pepperdine wins, they could snag a #2 seed. Pepperdine won the West Coast Conference West Division and has a pRPI of 34.

    Teams that are on the bubble for the bottom six #2 seeds are ...

    Virginia
    Winthrop
    Missouri
    South Carolina
    Arkansas
    Louisiana
    Southern Mississippi
    Stanford
    Auburn
    Pepperdine
    Wichita State

    With respect to the conference tournament upsets I mentioned earlier, there will be no #4 seeds with at-large bids this season. If Loyola Marymount pulls the upset over Pepperdine this afternoon, it will be yet another spot removed for teams on the bubble.

    Some teams on the bubble include ... (*) indicates in my current projected field of 64

    * Northwestern State
    * Creighton
    * North Carolina-Wilmington
    * St. John's
    * East Carolina
    * Cal Poly
    * Oklahoma
    Vanderbilt
    Georgia
    Georgia Southern
    Florida Atlantic
    California Irvine
    Michigan
    San Francisco
    Oklahoma State

    Is there any chance we end up in a regional with South Alabama? Or does it not work like that with conference opponents meeting in regionals? Sorry I'm not too aware of the regional formats and how they select where everyone is playing.

    No chance.

    Teams from the same conference cannot meet in the first round. South Alabama will be a #3 seed. If the Cajuns are a #2 seed, they obviously could not be paired in the same regional.

    Although this does not always happen (and disregard 2002 since this was an anomaly), the NCAA prefers that conference opponents are not even in the same regional, much less first round opponents.

    Mr. Brian do you have a better idea where the Cajuns stand?

    Pepperdine won today. I think they are going to get a #2 seed and stay out West.

    Right now, I have the Cajuns as the last #2 seed in the field. I currently have them in the Tulane Regional matched up against #3 seed Oklahoma.

    I have #1 seed LSU paired with strong #2 seed Rice, #3 seed Northwestern State, and #4 seed Southern.

    But I am still waiting for another RPI report which will come out this evening. That could changes things slightly.

    Note that I have the Cajuns as the last #2 seed just ahead of #3 seeds Southern Mississippi, Stanford, Missouri, and Auburn. I also have Wichita State as a #3 seed. I have the Cajuns behind #2 seeds Pepperdine, Winthrop, Virginia, Arkansas, South Carolina, and TCU.

    But these teams are tightly packed and the NCAA selection committee could go a variety of ways.

    Interesting to see that Tulane bid Turchin instead of Zephyr. I wonder what they will do for a Super?

    I have heard Tulane prefers to bid Turchin because it gives Tulane the best home field advantage ... A smaller packed stadium full of nearly all Tulane fans. You would not quite get the same rowdy environment at Zephyr. Tulane could afford to bid Turchin this year since they did not need an aggressive bid.

    I also know that Zephyr was not available for the regionals. They may have bid Zephyr for the supers. They had not decided last I heard a month ago.

    One thing that will be a disadvantage to Cajuns fans if they are sent to Tulane is that Cajun fans will only get 200 tickets. Do not count on finding *any* tickets at Turchin for games in which Tulane plays. Turchin is considerably smaller than Alex Box and tickets are a hot commodity for Tulane fans.

    Yeah. It could get interesting if they end up with another super against LSU.

    Patience! I am still undecided on one spot.

    I do not have Tulane and LSU paired. I have Tulane paired with Florida State and LSU paired with Baylor (national seed).
