Crowley police are investigating a rash of car thefts over the past two weeks.

During that time period, five passenger vans and one truck were stolen.

"The person who is doing them really feels comfortable with being able to jump start the vehicle, hot-wire the vehicle and go," said Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson.

Gibson believes they're targeting vans and trucks because it's easier to access the steering column to hot-wire them. The suspects aren't stealing and selling, but Gibson says the vehicles are driven out of the city and dumped where investigators believe another vehicle is waiting to take them back to Crowley. So far, police recovered three vans, one in Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Vermillion Parish.

"They dump a vehicle, park somewhere, and someone notices out of character a broken window or a vehicle that shouldn't be parked somewhere."

Police are stepping up patrols across the city. "It is in different areas, so we are kind of spread out far, but we are trying to get this resolved as quickly as we can and, we've got money to pay and we'd like to have the info," said Gibson.
