Kevin Figaro has come full circle.
When he was a youngster, Kevin watched his father Noah perform as one of the best semi-pro baseball and basketball players around.
Then Noah watched as Kevin became a star basketball player for Lafayette High and later the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
Now Kevin is coaching his son Devin on the Acadiana Hoops 15-and-under AAU basketball team, and the squad is off to a great start. Figaro's team sports a 23-2 overall record, including three tournament championships.
The Hoops are the No. 1 seed for this weekend's tournament at the Leadership's Gym in Baton Rouge.
The team has three players with the potential to be Top 10 players in the state by their senior years - 6-8 Javan Mitchell of St. Martinville, 6-5 Raymon Jones of Westgate in New Iberia and 6-4 Devin Figaro. All three will be sophomores in the fall.
Other team members include T.L. Ventroy of Cathedral Middle, Hanson's Grady Jones, Northside's Terrance Asberry and Lafayette High's Todd Young, Austin Abraham, Arsenio Francis, Isaiah Morgan and Xavier Francis.
Figaro has been coaching AAU ball since 1986 and loves coaching the kids. He stresses academics, good work habits and discipline, which he said his father instilled in him. He also coached his oldest son Kumari, who will be a senior at Lafayette High next season and plays on Team Louisiana's 17-and-under team.
