Even though most of Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball fans have their attention riveted on this weekend's Sun Belt Conference regular-season finale series, don't expect the Cajun squad to be looking past tonight's last mid-week game.
Why? Because 48 is a magic number.
The Cajuns (44-12) travel to Thibodaux and Ray Didier Field tonight to take on the Colonels of Nicholls State in a 6:30 p.m. contest, one of four games remaining in UL's regular season.
The Cajun squad needs a win tonight and a sweep this weekend at Western Kentucky to reach a preseason goal of 48 regular-season victories.
"Getting to 48 will take some work," said senior first baseman Phillip Hawke, "and I don't remember us winning much at Nicholls."
The Cajuns haven't in recent trips, winning only once in the last four games at Didier Field. That was in 2002, a 6-5 victory, and UL was unceremoniously dumped 15-5 in its last trip in 2003.
In fact, beating the nationally-ranked Cajuns may be the only goal that Nicholls (21-28) has remaining.
