Thread: Figaro plans to transfer to UL

Here's my blog on former Lafayette High standout Devin Figaro transferring to UL:

There will be more in Saturday's TDA:

Former Lafayette High and Tulane wide receiver Devin Figaro has decided to transfer to UL, his dad Kevin confirmed on Friday.

Figaro asked for and was granted his release from Tulane in the spring and began the process of transferring to UL on Friday.

"He just applied for his transcript to be sent (from Tulane to UL)," said Figaro, who played college basketball at UL before being drafted in the fourth round of the 1981 NBA draft by Atlanta. "Next week, we're going to probably go to UL and register for fall."

Figaro will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and would be eligible for two seasons at UL.

"He likes Hud (UL first-year coach Mark Hudspeth)," Figaro said. "I think Hud's spreading the offense and that falls into what Devin does, as far as opening it up.

"I think that was a big factor in him deciding to come to UL."

In two seasons with Tulane, Figaro caught 23 passes for 302 yards and a touchdown. Prior to Tulane, Figaro played ta Hargrave Military Academy and had 25 catches for 640 yards and nine touchdowns.

He was a three-year starter in football and a four-year letterman in basketball at Lafayette High. He was named first-team All-District as a senior after hauling in 28 catches for 678 yards and five TDs.

Nice pickup for hud. His dad is a former ul great, they are local and produced on the field for tulane as a frosh and sophomore. He will have an uphill climb with the talent ul has at wr, but willadd much needed depth and experience.

    Wow thanks Brady.

That is a kind move posting it here.

I am going to purposefully understate my next comment because I'm not, going to be so bold to say (or think) responsible for. . .

However my gut tells me the 100 year basketball reunion did not hurt this situation.

Change in coaching staff helped the situation.

I got a chance to speak with Kevin Figaro before, during and after the 100-year basketball reunion for stories. He was very impressed with both Marlin and Hudspeth.

Devin Figaro knew he couldn't pass up an opportunity to be a part of something big.

So when he started the process of narrowing his transfer choices down, UL was at the top of his list.

"...when he got out, they didn't really recruit him."

What was the prior staff thinking?

The prior staff did not recruit players that were not academically eligible. If he went to Hargrave I'm guessing he wasn't eligible coming out of LHS?

A change on both ends! A new regime has begun on Reinhardt Dr. in Lafayette, and the leader of the old regime is now on the staff on St. Charles Ave. in N.O. Maybe Figaro just wants to stay away from our former coach????
