Thread: Another Question for Brian (Gone Golfin)

  1. Default Another Question for Brian (Gone Golfin)

How much do you think the 2-2 week Middle Tennesee had against Vanderbilt and the cajuns help their RPI, and do you think with a 2-1 or a sweep of NMSU next weekend they could slip into the top 100 RPI wise and give a boost to our record vs top 100 RPI teams?

The Middle Tennessee win over Vanderbilt last week was huge for the Blue Raider RPI and also quite beneficial to the Cajun RPI. That road win over Vanderbilt accounted for the maximum possible bonus in the RPI formula (road win over Top 25 RPI team) as well as a strong win for the general formula. This vaulted Middle Tennessee into the 125 range before the weekend series vs. the Cajuns.

The Friday win for Middle Tennessee was also a huge bump (but no bonus) to their RPI. But it was not just the win, it was also increased SOS. As the weekend progressed, the Blue Raider RPI improved despite the losses.

Of course it depends on how other teams perform as well, but I think that if Middle Tennessee (pRPI 103) takes 2/3 from New Mexico State (pRPI 125), they will slip into the Top 100. But they also need to maintain it through the conference tournament. Another team on the fringe is Arkansas State (pRPI 100) which is now threatening the Top 100 after taking 2/3 from South Alabama this past weekend.

Another big help to the Cajun RPI this week was South Florida's two midweek wins over Florida (one on the road).

W/L record against the Top 100 is important and will be a statistic the selection commitee will use when performing their evaluations. But more important will be record against the Top 50 since this represents more closely the types of teams in the NCAA Tournament. Thus far, Northwestern State is solidly in the Top 50. Wichita State is still there but slipping. South Alabama is right on the fringe and may not be there in the official NCAA RPI formula. There are several Cajun opponents that are close to the Top 50 that I have been monitoring (St. John's, South Florida, Miami-Ohio, and FIU). If some of these teams can break into the Top 50, the Cajun record against the Top 50 will helped immensely.

Just as an aside, when determining whether a victory over a road opponent will result in an RPI bonus (Top 75, Top 50, Top 25), you cannot use the final listed ratings. Determination of whether a victory over such an opponent qualifies for a bonus is dependent on how they finish in the general formula (before the bonuses are applied), else the application of bonuses would be an infinite loop.
