Apparently, Danyele Gomez was the only one in Bowling Green, Ky. who wasn't expecting her name to be on the Player of the Year plaque at Wednesday night's awards banquet on the eve of the Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament hosted by Western Kentucky.
"It's a great honor," said Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns third baseman. "I didn't know it would happen at all. It was a surprise.
"It feels good, but I couldn't have done it without the coaches and the team. It feels cocky to talk about it."
Gomez, who hit 20 home runs as a freshman on the 2003 UL squad and belted a mammoth home run against Texas ace Cat Osterman in the Women's College World Series, is batting .365 with 18 home runs, 62 runs batted in and 126 total bases this year.
She has a .754 slugging percentage, and during the last three weeks of Sun Belt action has a staggering 1.078 slugging percentage. During that three-week period, Gomez has eight home runs and 32 RBI, including six RBIs in one game and four in three other contests.
